The live action version of one of Disney’s Aladdin may not have a release date yet, but it does have a cast! And an amazing cast at that! The cast is only one of the reasons to be excited for when Aladdin hits theaters!
4 Reasons to Get Excited for Disney’s Aladdin
Aladdin is still one of my favorite Disney movies ever. It may not have one of the best rides at Disney World, but the movie is pretty fantastic. And my husband and I had the chance to go and see the London production of Aladdin during our trip to Europe in May, so I know how good a live version can be. And how much the genie can steal the show! No release date yet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get excited about what we do know about the film!
#1 – Will Smith is the Genie
While no one can hold a candle to Robin Williams as the original genie, Will Smith has a big enough personality to get close to filling the genie’s shoes. During the London production, they did some incredible things with staging, scenes, and special effects during the genie’s big numbers, so I can only imagine what they will do with the film. I haven’t seen Will Smith in much other than Collateral Beauty lately, and I’m excited to see his take on the genie.
Will Smith’s not the only one cast so far. Check out this amazing cast list!
- Mena Massoud (Amazon’s Jack Ryan) – Aladdin
- Naomi Scott (Power Rangers) – Jasmine
- Marwan Kenzari (Murder on the Orient Express – so excited about that movie by the way!) – Jafar
- Navid Negahban (Homeland) – Sultan
#2 – Guy Ritchie is Directing
In addition to a fantastic cast, Aladdin has a dream team creating the movie behind the scenes. I love all of the movies they’ve touched on their own and can’t wait to see what they come up with all together.
- Guy Ritchie – directing
- John August (Big Fish) – screenplay
- Dan Lin (The Lego Movie) – producing
- Marc Platt (La La Land), Johnathan Eirich (Deathnote), Kevin De La Noy (Dark Knight Rises) – Executive producing
- Alan Menken – musical score
#3 – New Characters and New Stories
We saw it in the live-action adaptation of Beauty the Beast, and I saw it in the London musical version of Aladdin – as these stories are retold, they can also be reinvented and added to in magical ways. For example, in the animated movie, the sidekicks are a monkey, a tiger, and a bird. That’s a little tough to do in a live-action film, and based on the casting of Nasim Padrad from Saturday Night Light as Jasmine’s hand maiden (not really a role in the animated film), I have a feeling they’re going to be switching things up in the live-action film as well.
And no details yet, but we know there will be at least two new original songs, and I’m hoping for some great musical scenes as well – maybe a little more genie magic!
#4 – It’s Aladdin!
Everything about Aladdin is just magical. The lamp. The carpet. The storyline of a boy who doesn’t think he’s good enough. The genie. The girl who wants to just make her own decisions. The music. It’s really just one of my favorite animated films ever, and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.
