With the release of Captain America Winter Soldier to DVD tomorrow, I thought it was only appropriate to share one of my favorite ideas from last week’s Captain America party!
For my Captain America party last week I thought it would be fun to actually give the kids individual lunches rather than having a table full of sandwiches and snacks. What better way to give them lunches then in their own individual handmade Captain America lunch boxes?
These are so simple to make and I’ll let you in on a little secret – they’re not just lunch boxes, they’re actually Captain America shields as well! I wanted the boxes to be something the kids could keep so I added a little elastic handle on the inside of the lid to turn it into an actual usable shield.
Make Your Own Captain America Shield Lunch Box
- Paper Mache Round Boxes
- Red Craft paint
- White and blue vinyl
- Vinyl cutter such as a Silhouette CAMEO (if using vinyl)
- 1 1/2 inch elastic
- Hot glue gun
- Outer red ring – 6.75 to 8 inches
- White ring – 5.5 to 6.75 inches
- Inner red ring – 4.25 to 5.5 inches
- Blue inner circle – 4.25 circle
- White star – 3.75 inch star (to keep it inside the circle)
Step 2 – Paint the lid and edges of the lid red. Let the paint dry completely. If you’d rather, you could also just cover the top of the lid with red vinyl, but my vinyl wasn’t big enough so I painted it red.
Step 3 – While your paint is drying, cut out your shapes on your Silhouette. You’ll need to cut out a white ring, blue circle, and white star. In order to create the rings, I created one circle that was the larger size (e.g., 5.5 inches) and one that was the smaller size (e.g., 4.25) and put the smaller circle inside of the larger. This created a ring about 1.25 inch in width to use for the shield.
Step 4 – After your paint dries, add your vinyl shapes to the top of the lid over the red paint to create your shield design – red ring, white ring, red ring, blue circle with white star over top.
Step 5 – Cut a five inch piece of elastic and hot glue the ends of the elastic to the inside of the lid to create your handle.
And you’re done! I told you it was easy. Such a fun project for your Captain America lover and a great way to serve lunch at a Captain America or superhero project.
Make sure to come back later this week to see all of the other awesome details from my Captain America party like the All-American trail mix.
