These easy color block vases are a great simple home decor idea and perfect for adding that pop of color you’re looking for!
It’s time for another edition of #MakeItFunCrafts! I love being part of the team and am inspired every month by how creative the other bloggers on the team are. This month we received a big box full of FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam cones in pretty much every size imaginable and were asked to create some sort of home decor. Thanks to FloraCraft® for sponsoring this post!
When I first opened the box, my mind went crazy with all of the possibilities. Ice cream cones, lighthouses, vases, and more. It took a while, but I finally decided that I wanted to make a piece of home decor that matches my living room and can stay up all year long rather than the seasonal decorations I have to take down every time a holiday is over. Or if you’re me, months after the holiday is over.
These color block vases are really simple to make. All you’ll need is:
- FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam cone – you could use any of the sizes but I used the 3 7/8 inch x 8 7/8 inch ones.
- Yarn in whatever colors you want
- Hot glue gun
- FloraCraft® StyroCutter® Plus
- Fake flowers or decorative element of some kind
Step 1 – First, wrap your cones with yarn. Hot glue the end of the first color of yarn to the bottom of the cone and then wrap your first color as high as you want it and then hot glue the end again. I did this same thing with my yarn candy corn a while ago, and it really helps to pull the yarn tight and let it slide through your hand slowly as you wrap. This helps you avoid the white gaps showing through.
Step 2 -Wrap the rest of your cones using the other two colors of yarn. To add some visual interest and the color block effect to the cones, I varied the height of each section on each of the cones.
Step 3 – Using your FloraCraft® StyroCutter® Plus, cut a small hole in the middle of the top portion of the cone. If you’ve never used a StyroCutter® before, you guys it’s life changing. Like I cut foam for fun now just to watch it melt. It heats up quickly and slices right through the foam like butter.
Step 4 – Embellish the front of the cones as you’d like. I added the word joy by hot gluing buttons in contrasting colors ot the front. The word joy has always had special meaning in my life ever since my sister passed away. Her middle name was Joy, and she was the perfect example of the word even in just the few short years she was with us. But if joy isn’t your thing, you can do something else. Or leave them unembellished and go with the simple color block look.
Step 5 – Last but not least, add some fake flowers or other decorative elements into the top of the cones. While they are fairly sturdy remember that they are still foam, so you can’t put something really heavy in there that might make them topple over.
And that’s it. I love how versatile foam is and love getting the chance to try it out for new projects each month. After you’re done making these vases, check out these other awesome ways to use FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam cones from my fellow #MakeItFunCrafts team members!
