Welcome to week 4 in our Fitness Jumpstart 8-week series! If you know nothing about the 8-week #fitnessjumpstart series I’m hosting with Heidi from Happiness is Homemade or why we’re doing it, start with this post then come back and get this week’s workout and meal plan! And if you missed out on weeks 1-3, no worries. You can still check out all of our previous week’s guides! The basic idea is that each Monday Heidi and I will be sharing a healthy meal plan, a workout plan, and giving away some amazing prizes along the way! And this week I’m sharing my Garmin Forerunner 220 review for anyone interested in buying a running watch for their running!
Thank you to Newegg for providing me with a Garmin Forerunner 220 to try out for my training! All opinions, content, and ideas are 100% my honest and my own.
One of my goals for this year and this half-marathon training is to run outside more. I’ve gotten into a pretty regular routine of going to the gym and running on the treadmill, mostly because they have a day care for my son, but I really need to get outside to run more often. I used to run outside all the time and just got out of the habit when I got pregnant a few years ago. One of the most frustrating things for me about running outside is not having an idea how far, how fast, or how long I’m running. I decided this time around I was going to have to fix that and bought a Garmin Forerunner 220 + heart rate monitor from the Newegg Marketplace, an awesome resource for electronics and tons of other stuff as well!
I’ve used a running watch before, a Garmin Forerunner actually, but it was years ago and I didn’t stick with it because the watch was really big and ugly. And no, I don’t typically care about fashion when it comes to running but the massive size of the thing was distracting me from the actual running part.
The Garmin Forerunner 220 is completely different and I’m in love. Not only is it cute (I bought this purple one), it has so many more functions than my old watch ever did. And compared to other fitness trackers and step counters out there, it has a ton of running specific features like specific interval training programs built into the watch, built-in GPS to calculate your distance, and my favorite – the opportunity to download your own training programs and schedules just by plugging the watch into your computer via the provided USB cord. I created my training program in the Garmin Connect program and uploaded it right to my watch, so it knows that hey today for my half marathon training I’m supposed to run 4 miles or I’m supposed to be doing interval training.
I used it this past weekend for one of my longer runs outside and it was so nice to know how fast I was running and when it was time to turn around to go home. And the watch is so easy to use. There are designated buttons on the sides for start, stop, and even when you finish a lap. I never once had to fumble through and try to find what I was looking for. You need to take a few minutes to figure out the watch before your first run but once you understand how it works, using it on an actual run is a piece of cake.
The watch I bought on the Newegg Marketplace actually came as a bundle with a heart rate monitor, which was really nice. It’s one of those ones that goes on a band and sits right below your chest while you run, so it’s fairly accurate and not too uncomfortable. I recommend using a little Glide with it if you have any issues with chafing because it is a band rubbing your skin for the duration of your run. The heart rate monitors talks directly to the watch and tracks right alongside the rest of your training data.
If you’re a runner looking for an entry-level watch, I highly recommend the Garmin Forerunner 220. You can check out more details and specs in the Newegg Marketplace along with the other colors like the red and black version. And while you’re there, don’t miss out on the great deals you can find in the Newegg Marketplace. Now onto this week’s workout plan!
This week there is one major change to the workout guide and that is adding in one day of interval training during the week. While a normal run is running at about the same pace for the distance or allotted time, interval training is doing intervals, or sets, at a certain pace followed by a rest then repeating the interval again. It’s actually one of my favorite things to do because the fast intervals really get my heart pumping versus running the same pace for three miles. Below is an example of a sample 45 minute interval workout. Feel free to switch it up for what works for your current fitness level. I specifically didn’t include paces and just said walk, slow jog, and fast run so that you can determine what those things mean to you. I programmed this into my new Garmin Forerunner 220 and it works great! You can download a printable version of this workout here or by clicking on the image below.
Now that we’ve got the workouts out of the way, let’s talk about food. Our trip to Turks and Caicos is just over a month away, so it’s really time to buckle down when it comes to eating healthier. This week is full of a variety of different lean meats, a variety of proteins, lots of veggies, and other healthy meals. I’m especially excited to try out the healthy turkey chili from my good friend Rebecca!
