I was invited by Disney, ABC & Freeform to Los Angeles for an all-inclusive Mary Poppins Returns Event. All opinions and ideas are 100% honest and my own! This post also contains affiliate links.
Who else absolutely loves holiday specials? Really just holiday anything. I watched Freeform’s Pop Up Santa last night then Nightmare Before Christmas and finally am beginning to get into the Christmas spirit!
Good thing it’s only the beginning of the season. There are a ton of holiday specials to be watched including two on ABC that I cannot wait to watch as part of ABC’s 25 Days of Christmas – The Great Christmas Light Fight and The Great American Baking Show: Holiday Edition!
I’m also just a bit excited about these shows because we got to interview and hang out with Carter Oosterhouse, judge and host on The Great Christmas Light Fight and with Sherry Yard, judge on The Great American Baking Show: Holiday Edition!
And they brought us gifts. Seriously. Sherry broke us chocolate bars and cookie cutters and Carter brought us Mickey Mouse Christmas light necklaces.
I ate the chocolate right away but the other gifts are totally going in my cool things I got from Disney trips bucket – right after I make some of these Mickey cake pops with the cookie cutters!
Before I get to highlights from our time with Sherry and Carter, here’s a bit more about these ABC holiday specials!

Holiday Chat with Carter Oosterhouse and Sherry Yard
With both of these shows bound to be popular holiday specials this year, I was so excited to sit down with judges from both of the shows.
What type of decorations does Carter prefer?
First question of the day – does Carter decorate his house quite as outlandishly as some of the contestants on his show.
His answer? He does decorate but he doesn’t go as crazy anymore because after seeing all of the decorated houses out there, he knows he just can’t compete.
He also mentioned that the decorations that he loves most, or finds the most exciting, are when people use unexpected things in their decor, specifically mentioning dinosaurs and helicopters.
Just glad my son wasn’t in the room; he’d totally demand that I decorate our house with dinosaurs next year!
What type of dessert does Sherry prefer?
Decorations, dessert – you know two things we all love.
So of course we asked Sherry about her favorite dessert. Specifically if she had to pick one dessert to eat for the rest of her life what would it be?
Her response was immediate.
Good choice Sherry – I love that ice cream can be so versatile. You really could eat it every day for the rest of your life and make it a bit different each time.
And p.s., if Sherry had to choose a baked good, it would be hot apple strudel with ice cream on top. I personally would skip the strudel and make something like this Groot Beer Float with my ice cream!
When are the shows filmed?
As a blogger I know that typically things have to be done in advance, like really far in advance. What I didn’t realize was how far in advance these shows really were filmed.
Carter told us that last year they actually filmed two seasons of The Great Light Fight at once – that year’s episodes AND this year’s (2018) episodes. It was pretty crazy so they changed things up this year and are currently filming decorated homes for next year’s season. So homes you see on this year’s episodes are not actually out there to see right now – they were filmed last year.
And if you lucked out and somehow saw them filming a house in your neighbor or city, it won’t be on this year so don’t look for it. Look for it next season!
The Great American Baking Show is similar in that they have to film ahead of time but in their case, it was only a few months. They were filming this “holiday special” in the middle of August in England. Sherry said there wasn’t a lot that had to be staged for the holiday special because they were in a tent most of the time, but she did laugh a bit telling us about how they had to put on heavy coats to go do some filming outside by the fire.
At least they weren’t filming outside in LA in August. Now that would be miserable!
Does the competition vary by region?
One of the most interesting things they told us was that in each of their respective shows, the competitors and their creations (decorations or baked goods) actually vary by region. In California for instance, certain things will be much more important than say in the South when it comes to home decorations. And baking competitors are the same – they’ll use different types of ingredients and spices based on where they’re from.
Catch both shows with celebrity judges and their competitors from across the country this holiday season on ABC’s 25 Days of Christmas!
