Use these ten tips to improve your health and fitness in just 10 minutes!
This past weekend my church held its general conference, a semi-annual conference where the leaders of the church share messages with members of the church via a worldwide broadcast. It’s one of my favorite weekends of the entire year because it’s a great time to be refreshed and inspired to be a little better. Each year I write a ton of notes and come out of conference inspired to make changes in my life. One of my favorite talks this weekend was this one by Elder Devin G. Durrant about concentrating on, or in his words, ponderizing, a single scripture each week. He talked about how if we have a scripture to focus on each week, it helps us to keep our thoughts positive and uplifting rather than getting bogged down in the negativity of the world around us.
What does that have to do with living a healthier life? I went into general conference with a number of “how can I” questions that I was looking for answers to. How can I live a healthier life, how can I be a better mother, how can I strengthen my relationship with my husband, and so on.
One of the underlying themes of multiple talks during conference was the idea that we can’t change everything all at once. We have to take things step by step, making small changes like “ponderizing” just one scripture a week, to hopefully bring about big changes. That theme helped me to pick this week’s scripture from Alma 37:6, “ Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise.”
By small and simple things are great things brought to pass.
For me, the way to live a healthier life is to change the small things first, which eventually lead to the bigger things. And when I say small, I mean small, like 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there. Walmart is hosting America’s biggest health fair this weekend and in honor of it being October 10th (10/10), they are going to be sharing tons of ways that you can improve your health in just 10 minutes – things like getting health screenings (for free at the fair!), getting health insurance, and stocking up your medicine cabinet. I thought it would be fun to join the party by sharing 10 ideas of my own. As I’ve gone on my own journey to become healthier, these 10 things have really helped me feel better.
10 Ways to Improve Your Health and Fitness in Just 10 Minutes
Pack It Up
Pack your gym bag before you go to bed at night. Or if you don’t go to the gym, get your workout clothes together the night before so you can just grab and go.
Fill It Up
Fill up 3 or 4 water bottles (16-24oz each) and put them in the fridge before you go to bed. That way you’ll have a water bottle full of cold water all ready to go when you get thirsty.
Put It Away
Set your alarm then put your phone down at least 10 minutes before you go to bed. Don’t touch it again until your alarm goes off in the morning. Giving yourself a chance to wind down without all of the distractions on your phone will help you sleep better.
Work It Out
Exercise during commercials. Instead of just sitting there and watching TV, get up and do some sort of simple workout – jumping jacks, push-ups, crunches, jog in place, etc. – during each set of commercials. And if you’re one of those people like me who doesn’t watch commercials, set a timer and do two-five minute workouts for each 30 minutes of TV you watch.
Split It Up
Divide your fruits and veggies. Make it easy to snack on healthy foods by splitting your fresh fruits and veggies into plastic baggies rather than leaving them in the big pack. If it’s something like grapes that can be washed right away, wash then divide. If not, just divide right away then wash before you eat. There’s a reason that they make so much money on those single serving chip bags; it’s easy to grab a small bag.
Pick It Up
Do a 10 minute pick-up session at the end of each day. It sounds strange but I can tell you from experience that life is a lot less stressful when you can look at a room and not be overwhelmed by the piles of mail, dirty dishes, and laundry. Take 10 minutes to pick-up at the end of the day, and I promise you’ll feel much better when you wake up the next day. Less stress = a healthier you!
Get Yourself Ready
This can be whatever you want it to be but take 10 minutes to get ready for the day by getting dressed, putting on makeup, or taking a quick shower. Do whatever it is that will make you feel best about yourself because I guarantee that you’re more likely to make good decisions about eating and exercise if you feel good about yourself. There’s just something about feeling frumpy and unfit that makes eating a piece of chocolate okay.
Just Push It
Do something each day that challenges you whether it be lifting a little heavier weight, running an extra five minutes than you’d planned, or drinking more water than the day before. We are made to be challenged and challenges help us to grow and get stronger; those same principles apply to living healthy. So push yourself to be a little better each day and eventually you’ll realize that you are better.
Shout It Out
It’s been proven that people who have a good support system are more successful in living a healthy life. Each day share a success with a family member or friend who is supportive. The success could be as simple as hey, I made it to the gym when I really didn’t want to go or I said no to the second chocolate chip cookie. Sharing your successes with other people helps reinforce that you made a good decision that you should be proud of and encourages you to make more good decisions.
Schedule It Out
I wrote a post a couple of months ago about how to be more productive every day and one of the tips I gave was to plan out your day the night before and this tip goes for healthy living as well. Each week, or each night, take 10 minutes to schedule in when you’re going to workout, what meals you’re going to eat the next day, what your challenges are going to be, etc. It’s SO much easier to stick to your plan if you have a plan.
