Is Incredibles 2 okay for kids? Should you go see it this weekend? Is Jack Jack as cute as you think he’s going to be? Find out the answers to these questions and more in this Incredibles 2 movie review and guide to why everyone should go see it!
The 14 year wait is finally over! Incredibles 2 is out today! And everyone should put it on their to-do list for this weekend. My short review is that it’s incredible. And that’s not just because I went to the Incredibles 2 press event and learned all about the animation, costuming, and storylines at Pixar Animation Studios!
Is Incredibles 2 Okay for Kids?
We went with my 5-year-old and while he was exhausted and telling me he was tired through the entire movie, he thoroughly enjoyed it. And he personally had no issues with the fighting even though it was a bit more intense than the original, but he’s also seen Thor: Ragnarok, The Last Jedi, and Solo (without me last week). He’s a sensitive kid but not sensitive when it comes to movies. There is also a tiny tiny bit of language that I personally barely even noticed but hey, it’s there so telling you about it.
There’s also one scene that could be a bit scary as it’s a bit dark and intense waiting to see what will happen. But my son didn’t seem to be bothered or even notice it – just putting it out there.
If you’re worried about taking your kids, I’d see it first then take them the second time around. All kids are different.
Here’s a more detailed review of whether or not Incredibles 2 is okay to take the entire family.
But for me, the part that is the most bothersome for kids is going to be Bao, Pixar’s new short film that is definitely geared more toward adults than kids. I’m guessing most young kids just won’t get it or will think it’s weird, like my little guy.
Incredibles 2 – Why Everyone Should See It
There are so many good reasons to see Incredibles 2. If you’ve seen Incredibles in the past 14 years, you’re going to want to see this one anyway. But here are a few reasons that you should go see it with your family and friends! And then throw an Incredibles party (you’re going to want to) with these awesome Incredibles party ideas!
#1 – It’s Incredible
You knew I was going to do it didn’t you? I could’ve used super, great, really good, or really any other description word but I went for incredible. Because it really is. From the Incredibles 2 animation to the costume designing in Incredibles 2, all of the details are really incredible. And the storyline is maybe a bit predictable (what family movie isn’t) but super fun as well!
I mean watch this short clip and you’ll know already it’s going to be fun!
#2 – The Action and Comedy are Spectacular
From pretty much the first scene of the movie, Incredibles 2 is action packed and full of laughs. It’s kind of like when Brad Bird told us that he wanted to balance the super with the mundane throughout the movie, it seems like the action and comedy were well-balanced as well. From the brand new Elasticycle blowing up into a million sparks, fight scenes featuring new superhero powers, and Frozone freezing things to save the day – the action animation is as good as any animated film you’ve ever seen.
And then there’s the comedy, which is well-placed and natural, not forced like other animated movies I’ve seen recently. Jack Jack seems to be at the center of a lot of the comedy but everyone else gets their quips in as well. New math, Violet’s embarrassment with a boy friend at school, Bob trying to handle the kids, and of course Frozone’s wife Honey at home trying to figure out why Frozone needs his super suit yet again.
#3 – It Promotes Role Reversals at Home
One of the things I loved most about the movie was that instead of Bob Parr going out and getting a job this time around, Helen Parr (Elastigirl) steps up to the plate. And Bob stays home to support her.
As a mom who also works and has a husband who holds down the fort while I go on work trips (like to the Pixar Animation Studios) or need to get a job done at home, I really appreciated the role reversals this time around. The best part is that Bob at home, while a bit envious that Elastigirl was supering it up around town, did the best he could to really hold down the fort – not just trudge through the misery.
I don’t remember the exact quote but my favorite line of the movie was something along the lines of I need to be successful so she can be successful so we all can be successful. Bob taking care of the kids (and pretending things were going okay) gave Helen the freedom from guilt and the flexibility she needed to be focused on what she was doing instead of the disaster happening at home.
Want to know what actors Craig T. Nelson (Bob) and Helen Hunter (Helen) had to say about this role reversal? Check out this awesome Incredibles 2 interview with the two leading superheroes.
#4 – It Features All the Superheroes
Since the mains storyline of the movie is that Helen gets a new job working for a company that wants to bring supers back, superheroes come out of the woodwork quickly after the movie begins. And superheroes come with their own set of powers, identity, and quirkiness. As producer Nicole Grinder mentioned during our interview with Incredibles 2 filmmakers, one of the best new superheroes is Voyd voiced by none other than Sophia Bush who I adore.
The coolest part about all the superheroes is seeing the imagination of the Pixar animation team coming to life. During my visit to the Pixar Animation Studios, we did a fun activity called making your own super where they taught us about how these new superheroes came to life. They literally went into a room and started crafting up a storm – cutting shapes, colors, and pieces to put together what would eventually become the new lineup of superheroes. It was so fun to see those paper characters come to life on the screen!
#5 – Jack Jack and Edna Steal the Screen
While everyone in the film is good, Jack Jack and Edna Mode are great. While both technically have a supporting role to the other supers in the film, I’d say they were far and away the stars of the show. Especially Jack Jack. He’s the world’s cutest and craziest baby. But put Jack Jack and E together and the world is changed. I think I even liked Edna more in this movie than the original Incredibles and that’s saying something.
Come back Monday for more details on Jack Jack in Incredibles 2 and why dealing with his emerging powers was such a struggle for animators!
And like producer John Walker said, the scenes with Bob trying to take care of Jack Jack at home – yeah, those are definitely some of my favorite moments of the film. This cookie clip is one of my favorites!
#6 – Family is Still at the Heart
The thing that makes Incredibles and Incredibles 2 different than any other superhero movie is that it’s a family fighting crime together. It’s a movie about a family first then a movie about superheroes. This movie does a great job of balancing the super with the typical family life and really reminds us why we all fell in love with the Incredibles in the first place 14 years ago.
Now let’s just hope it doesn’t take Brad Bird another 14 years to make Incredibles 3!

About Incredibles 2
In Incredibles 2, Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), Dash (voice of Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack—whose super powers are about to be discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Incredibles don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.
