Mary Poppins Returns starring Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda hits theaters on December 25, 2018! Find out why families should be looking forward to this magical sequel coming your way this year!
Mary Poppins Returns Teaser Trailer
If you haven’t heard already, Mary Poppins herself is returning to the theaters this coming Christmas. I know that seems so far away, but it’ll be here before you know it! There are a few other Disney movies coming out in 2018 that I’m excited about as well but Mary Poppins Returns is definitely near the top of that list!
I almost forgot how much I loved the original until we went on a Disney Cruise a few weeks ago and one of the musical numbers in the Disney Believe Show is a Mary Poppins number. You guys, I was grinning from ear to ear the entire time.
If the sequel is even half as good a the original, it’ll be a masterpiece. I seriously can’t wait! And we now have the very first teaser trailer and yep, I’m already hooked!
6 Things to Know About Mary Poppins Returns
We don’t know much yet about Mary Poppins Returns but what we do know so far is amazing! Make sure to bookmark or pin this post, and I’ll keep it updated as we find out new information!
#1 – It’s Not a Remake
When I first hear they were making a new Mary Poppins, I assumed they were remaking the original. I was horrified. The original is so good that in my mind it’s really untouchable. Seems like Disney feels that way too because this one is not a remake, it’s a sequel with Mary Poppins returning years later. This time the original Banks’ children are all grown up and Mary is coming back to help inspire happiness and joy in the Banks’ family after a personal loss. It’s a totally different story that will be magical, whimsical, and of course, musical.
#2 – It Stars Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda
Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins) will be joined by none other than Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton, Moana, and so many other things fame. And know it’s going to be good if he’s involved. Anything music + Lin-Manuel Miranda related is bound to be good. Miranda isn’t responsible for the songs or score in this one (Marc Shaiman + Scott Wittman are), but I’m guessing he’ll be singing, which is good enough for me!
I’ll be honest, Lin-Manuel Miranda makes this one a must-see for me. I really like Emily Blunt, but she’s not the big seller – Miranda is.
The film also stars in lesser roles – Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks, Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks, Julie Walters as the Banks’ housekeeper, Colin Firth as William Weatherall Wilkins, Meryl Streep as Mary’s cousin Topsy, Angela Lansbury as the Balloon Lady, and Dick Van Dyke as Mr. Dawe’s Jr. We will also get to meet three new Banks’ children (Michael Banks’ children) played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh, and Joel Dawson.
#3 – The Film Will Include All New Music
I may be the only one hoping that they bring back some of the classics, even if they’re just for little tidbits of other songs but from what we’ve heard so far, the film will include all new songs and an original score. As I mentioned above, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will be writing the songs and composing the new score. Disney has been doing some incredible things with their music lately (hello Moana and Coco), so I’m excited to see what they do to modernize Mary Poppins! Or not.
#4 – Mary Poppins’ Magical Bag Will Be Returning As Well
Julie Andrews was one incredible Mary Poppins, so Emily Blunt has some pretty big magical shoes to fill. Luckily, she gets to bring Mary’s magical bag and umbrella along for the adventure. Like other movies that have had multiple actors play the same character, it’ll be really interesting to see how Emily portrays such an iconic character. She’s proven herself over the years as capable of taking on both dramatic and comedic roles, so I’m really hoping she’s up for the job! I’m definitely rooting for her.
#5 – Kids and Adults Both Will Love It
I’ve gotta hand it to Disney, they sure know what they’re doing. Christopher Robin and Mary Poppins returning all in the same year, it could be called the year of our childhood returning to the big screen. Adults will love Mary Poppins returns because it’s nostalgic (and hopefully amazing!) and kids will love it because it’s centered around kids having fun and finding joy again. It seems like the kind of movie, like Thor: Ragnarok, that is designed to make people walk out of the movie theater smiling, unlike A Wrinkle in Time that will have kids and parents having discussions about what just happened.
