A no-spoiler Mary Poppins Returns review and why everyone will love this brand new film!
I was invited by Disney, ABC & Freeform to Los Angeles for an all-inclusive Mary Poppins Returns Event. All opinions and ideas are 100% honest and my own!
My Mary Poppins Returns Review
I’ve had so many people ask me what I thought about Mary Poppins Returns since I went to the Mary Poppins Returns red carpet premiere a few months ago.
My answer has been pretty straightforward – if you liked the original, you’re going to love the new one! And since everyone that I’ve ever met likes the original (I mean how can you not!?!), my bets are that most people are going to love this one too!
These are just six reasons I loved it and think you will too!
1 – Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda
I’ve always liked Emily Blunt but when they announced she was going to be Mary Poppins, I mean it was a shocker. Not because it was her but because anyone other than Julie Andrews was going to be Mary Poppins.
Emily Blunt plays Mary Poppins differently than Julie Andrews, in a good way. She truly made Mary Poppins her own, and as she described in our interview with her, more of the Mary Poppins from the book series.
She’s quirky. She’s beautiful. And she’s practically perfect in every way.
Like I told my husband, Emily does a fantastic job of portraying Mary Poppins as if she’d grown up a bit and returned years later. No one would be the exact same person decades later, and I think it’s a perfect fit!
And then there’s Lin-Manuel Miranda. You automatically want to compare him to Dick Van Dyke in the original but don’t. Let him be his own person. Just enjoy Lin-Manuel for who he is and his natural charisma.
The two of them together are what this world needs right now – imagination and joy epitomized by two awesome characters.
2 – The Music
If you liked the music in the original Mary Poppins, you’re going to love the music in this one. While not the same by any stretch of the imagination, the soundtrack and score created by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are just magical. They transport you into these make believe worlds and have you wanting to watch the movie over and over again just to see the musical numbers.
There’s loud numbers, soft numbers, tender numbers, and exhilarating ones. And it’s all done without the use of the original music except toward the very end when the old music is subtly added in one of the best moments of the entire movie.
Not only the music is wonderful, but the dancing as well. The dancing in this movie is amazing from the eight minute Trip a Little Light Fantastic number Lin-Manuel mentioned in our interview with him to the Cover is Not the Book number with canes and wigs!
3 – Animation Meets Live Action
It’s a Mary Poppins movie – it has to have live action and animation colliding or else it wouldn’t feel like the same whimsical magical story.
The animation in this movie is leaps and bounds above that of the first while still feeling familiar and nostalgic for the first.
Look for all of the minute details in the animation when you go see the movie for a second or third time.
4 – The Supporting Cast
I’m not talking about the Banks family, I’m talking about the rest of the supporting cast of characters who show up just once or twice in the movie.
Meryl Streep. Angela Lansury. Dick Van Dyke.
They might have minor roles but their moments in the film are powerful ones and keep it from feeling like you’re just following Mary Poppins, Jack, and her kids around all day.
5 – The Lamplighters
Okay, this might just be me but I absolutely loved the lamplighters in this movie – especially in their big number Trip a Little Light Fantastic. It’s just amazing to watch on screen and one of those scenes I’d personally love to see on an actual stage someday
6 – The Magic
Lin-Manuel Miranda said it best during our interview with him when he said that we are all born with this inherent belief in imagination and then life does what it does and takes that away as we grow up.
Mary Poppins Returns brings that imagination, magic, and fun back in a way that I think we all need right now.
We’re all too busy working, worrying, and waiting on the next best thing to enjoy the moments, magic, and memories we’re creating right now.
Out of all of the reasons that I absolutely loved Mary Poppins Returns, I think the feeling you get at the end of the movie like anything is possible and life really is wonderfully magical, that’s the most important one of all!
And best of all – I think both kids and adults will love this movie. There’s so much for the kid in all of us to enjoy, especially since this movie was one of the first that many people saw in theaters years ago!
I can’t wait for all of you to see Mary Poppins Returns. I hope you clap, cheer, and celebrate imagination the same way I did!
