Keeping a new home looking brand new is one of the hardest things to do, but these new home cleaning tips can help! Simple ideas that don’t take much time and still have a huge impact on how long your new home stays shiny and clean.
We bought a new home in Texas just over a month ago, a brand new home. And it’s beautiful inside. With a 3-year-old, there are things that are always going to be out of my control like the fact that there are little tiny toys littering my living room rug right now. And superheroes waiting to defeat the dinosaurs lining the couches in our media room. But there are some things I can control, things I’ve been doing over the past month that help the house maintain the beautiful and shiny new home look.
New Home Cleaning Tips
Tip #1 – Spend 15 minutes at night picking things up before you go to bed.
This one has been huge for me. A couple of weeks ago I told myself I would clear off our large island before I go to bed every night. And now it’s turned into a quick 15 minute pickup. There’s just something about having large empty spaces rather than cluttered ones that is de-stressing. And bonus, picked up homes look and feel more brand new. I mean, have you ever walked through a model home that’s cluttered and messy?
Tip #2 – Use All-Natural Cleaning Products
If you look at the typical cleaning products you find on the shelves at a grocery store or likely the ones underneath your sink right now, I’m willing to bet there are at least a handful of chemicals you’ve never heard of. And who knows what those do to the surfaces in your brand new home.
Our family has recently switched to using Lemi Shine cleaning products, a line of water based all-natural products powered by 100% natural citric extracts. They’re non-toxic, biodegradable, and septic system safe, which means no worrying about eating off your island after you sprayed it down with Leme Shine Glass + Surface Cleaner. We picked them up at our local Kroger, but you can find your local store to buy them here.
And as my sister so kindly pointed out when she was helping clean up after our weekend of Halloween games, the products all smell good. It’s probably the citrus extracts they use as cleaning agents.
Tip #3 – Have a place for everything and put everything it its place.
And I mean everything. Create a command center for opened mail. Have an organized junk drawer for pens and scissors. Buy a toy organizer to keep all of those little tiny things, and make sure to teach your kids how to use it. This goes back to the 15-minute declutter, keeping your house picked up helps with the new home appearance.
Tip #4 – Take care of dishes and food right away.
This is especially important for us in Texas where things are super humid and the bugs are everywhere. If I leave food out, it’s stale in about three hours. Or the fruit flies start swarming. Instead, rinse things off and put them in the dishwasher immediately after eating. Then when you do your 15 minute pickup at the end of the day, toss any remaining dishes in the dishwasher, add some all natural Lemi Shine Dishwasher Detergent and let it run while you’re sleeping. You’ll wake up to clean dishes and no bugs.
And if you need a little extra boost for grimy dishes, use Lemi Shine Detergent Booster to help get rid of any spots, stains, or film residue you’re seeing. Lemi Shine has been known for their clean freak dishes for over 20 years, so they definitely know how to get the job done. And for all those pots and pans or other non-dishwasher safe (who does that by the way??) dishes, Lemi Shine just recently launched a new concentrated dish soap for hand washing. Same all-natural, smelling good, and powerful stuff just in dish soap format. And right now if you buy the booster and use this coupon, you can get dish soap for free!
Tip #5 – Take care of your appliances.
One of the places in our home that tends to get and stay the dirtiest is our appliances. From the inside of the microwave to the knobs on the cooktop, our appliances seem to get the brunt of the cooking mess. Taking care of your appliances is one sure way to keep at least your kitchen looking brand new. Once a week use Lemi Shine Glass + Surface cleaner to get rid of messes, fingerprints, and grease that if you’re like me, cover your new appliances. And for that garbage disposal, try out Lemi Shine Garbage Disposal Cleaner to not only clean but get a much better smell from the disposal.
Tip #6 – Get the entire family involved.
Keeping your home clean and looking brand new isn’t something you can do on your own. It’s a family affair. Include everyone in the 15-minute nightly pickup, have places for everyone’s stuff in a command center, and teach your family the importance of rinsing dishes and putting them away. Even my 3-year-old knows that when he’s done with something, it either goes in the trash or dishwasher. Unless it’s past his bedtime and then things just get thrown on the ground.
We created a chore chart for toddlers a couple of months ago and now that I’ve found the all-natural Lemi Shine products, I added one helping mom task to my son’s chart each week – helping me clean the windows, helping me put away dishes, etc. It’s turned into a game rather than a chore and definitely working. And since we’re using the non-toxic Lemi Shine cleaning products, my son can actually help with everything without me needing to pull out the number for poison control.
