I’m sure you’ve probably seen the chocolate-covered strawberry turkeys out there that use mini marshmallows and pretzel sticks to make a strawberry look like a turkey.

These are not those, but I personally like these better for a number of reasons but one being they’re much easier to make still being some of the cutest Thanksgiving treats! I’m also a sucker for anything with candy eyes – must be because my boys love them or because candy is my love language!

These fun chocolate-covered strawberries are perfect for adding with place cards on your Thanksgiving table (kids and adults!) or add them to a Thanksgiving charcuterie board on Thanksgiving Day.

Or make these chocolate strawberry turkeys as the perfect addition to a Thanksgiving dinner celebration at school, at church, or just with your friends! They really work for anything Thanksgiving themed!

Why you’ll love this

  • Simple ingredients – with just a few ingredients that you likely have on hand, you can make these fun turkeys that everyone will enjoy.
  • Festive – the only thing better than a chocolate-covered strawberry is when it’s decorated like a turkey and served for Thanksgiving.
  • Easy to make – Thanksgiving requires a lot of time in the kitchen and these treats will make a huge impact without adding time to your already busy day.

Ingredient Notes

  1. Chocolate – any brand or type of melting wafers will work for this. If you want to use chopped chocolate instead of wafers that will work as well. Or you could also do chocolate candy melts, milk chocolate chips, or even chocolate almond bark if you really want. You just need something that can be melted that will set fairly quickly. Milk chocolate, semi chocolate, and dark chocolate all work for these!
  2. Candy corn – if you aren’t a candy corn person you can try it with M&Ms or even dried pineapple.
  3. Orange candies – I used orange M&Ms but you could also use any orange candies you want. I recommend staying away from Reese’s Pieces even though they’re the right color unless you know there aren’t any nut allergies to worry about!
  1. Candy eyes – you should be able to find these in your local store but if not you can also purchase them here.
  2. Red sprinkles – to find this shape it’ll usually be in a seasonal pack like this fall leaf pack. You can also use a red circle sprinkle if that’s easier to find.
  3. Strawberry – only fresh strawberries will work for this recipe. You want to keep the whole strawberry (including the top of the strawberry) to make dipping easier! These are also easiest with large strawberries so try to get those ones out of the carton!

Tip!

You can also add a little bit of coconut oil to the chocolate to make it melt smoother for dipping purposes. This is optional, but I think it makes it easier to melt the chocolate!

How to make a strawberry turkey

Making this delicious turkey treat is as easy as dipping and decorating – so easy you could even have kids make their own chocolate turkeys! I have included all of my tips and tricks to help ensure yours come out as cute as mine did!

Make sure to read the recipe card down at the bottom of the post as well for all of the measurements and even more helpful tips for making these Thanksgiving turkeys!

1 – Prepare strawberries

  1. Lay a piece of parchment paper or wax paper on your working surface.
  2. Wash the strawberries and let them dry completely. To help them dry quicker, you can wrap them in a paper towel and dry thoroughly. If the strawberries are not dry, the chocolate will not stick to them.

2 – Melt chocolate and Dip Strawberries

  1. Add the chocolate melting wafers into a microwave-safe bowl and melt the chocolate in the microwave. The best way to do this is to microwave in 30-second increments stirring between each one until the chocolate is fully melted. It should only take two to three increments.

Tip!

If you’d prefer to not use the microwave, you can also melt the chocolate using a double boiler! This is a great way to ensure the chocolate is all melted and heated all the way through but the microwave method is definitely a faster way to get to your chocolate strawberries!

  1. After the chocolate is fully melted, it’s time to dip your strawberries. Hold a strawberry by the stem and dip the entire strawberry in until the chocolate covers 3/4 of the strawberry, leaving a little section at the top.
  2. After you dip each strawberry into the chocolate, let any excess chocolate drip off the strawberry then place it onto the parchment paper with the top of the strawberries (where the stem is) is face down on the parchment paper.

3 – decorate strawberries

  1. While the chocolate is still soft, add four pieces of candy corn to the back of the strawberry to make the turkey feathers. You will want the tips of the candy corn to be pointing down and the tops of the candy corn to be just above the top of each strawberry to look like feathers. You may need to hold these in place for a few seconds while the chocolate sets.
  2. Put two candy eyes at the front of the strawberry, one M&M for the nose, and a red sprinkle to the bottom for the turkey giblet. Decorating the turkey strawberries is one of the best parts!

Tip!

Dip and fully decorate one turkey at a time so the chocolate doesn’t harden before you’re able to add the candy! This is a really great Thanksgiving activity to do together – one person dips and the other person or people decorate the turkeys! If for some reason the chocolate sets before you have a chance to add the candy, just add a little melted chocolate underneath to stick it on!

4 – let turkeys cool

Now that the little turkeys are dipped in chocolate and decorated, let them cool completely. To cool them quicker, place the parchment paper on a cookie sheet and place it into the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.

After the turkeys are fully set they are ready to serve! Or if you don’t want to serve right away, put them in the fridge and chill until you want to serve them!

These don’t stack well so if you want to take them to a party, I recommend putting them into a baking dish or on a baking sheet in a single layer and cover them loosely with foil to transport.

Tips & tricks

Adding a teaspoon of coconut oil to the chocolate will help it to coat the strawberries smoother.

Be patient when adding the candy corn, they can be a bit heavy and will take a second for the chocolate to set. You might need to hold them in place for a few seconds. Using slightly chilled candy corn will help them set faster.

Use room-temperature strawberries, otherwise, they have the potential to condensate and that will make it harder for the chocolate to stick.

If the chocolate is not setting it may be too warm where you are working. Place turkeys in the fridge so they can set.

Store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to three days or until the strawberries go bad.

I do not recommend freezing these. Frozen chocolate covered strawberries are not great thawed.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use frozen strawberries?

No, using frozen strawberries will produce too much moisture when they unthaw and cause the chocolate to not stick and end up being mushy.

How long do chocolate covered strawberries last?

When stored properly, chocolate covered strawberries will last for as long as the strawberries stay good.

How do you get a smooth finish on the chocolate?

Getting a smooth finish on the chocolate is a result of dipping and allowing the excess to drip off. You can also add coconut oil to the chocolate to make it easier to dip.
