Cookie Monster Cookies are big, thick, and ultra-chewy cookies that have chunks of white chocolate chips, mini Oreos, and mini chocolate chip cookies studded throughout. The signature blue dough, which is inspired by everyone’s favorite Sesame Street Cookie Monster, adds so much character to a classic cookie recipe!

I don’t know about you, but my kids are certainly cookie monsters! Our entire family loves them, but there’s something fun about themed cookies like reindeer cookies, turkey cookies, and melted snowman cookies that my kids really get a kick out of.
These cookie monster cookies are inspired by the lovable Sesame Street character, the REAL cookie monster and my kids aren’t the only ones who devour them.
They’re loaded with white chocolate chips, mini chocolate chip cookies, and mini Oreo Cookies. They’re thick, soft, chewy, chewy, and are unmistakably cookie monster BLUE!
Made with simple baking staples, this one-bowl recipe yields an entire batch of cookies in under an hour! So they’re the perfect cookie to whip up for any Sesame Street-themed birthday party, movie night, or just because your inner cookie monster comes calling!

Ingredients
Ingredient Notes & Substitutions
- Unsalted butter– bring cold butter to room temperature by letting it sit out about 30 minutes before you start. Either unsalted or salted works in this recipe, it really doesn’t matter.
- Sugars – I use both white granulated sugar and brown sugar to sweeten the cookies and keep the sweetness balanced. If you just do one or the other, the cookies won’t have the same flavor. Light brown sugar is best in this recipe!
- Blue food coloring – I recommend blue gel food coloring for the blue color in these cookies. It’s more concentrated than liquid food coloring, which means you need fewer drops to get it as vibrant as you’d like.
- Mini Oreos and Chocolate Chip cookies – you’ll be breaking these up to put into the dough and to put on top so technically you could use a whole Oreo cookie and large cookies, just broken into smaller pieces. If you do use mini cookies, I like the Grandma’s or Amos brands!
- Flour – all-purpose flour works best in these cookies, I don’t recommend substituting self rising flour, cake flour, or any other kind of flour.
How to make Cookie Monster Cookies
These cookie monster cookies are so simple to make! And since they only have to chill for 30 minutes, you can make, bake, and be chomping on them all within the hour!
1 – make the cookie monster cookie dough
In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. I like to use a paddle attachment but you can use whatever you have that will cream them together!
Add the egg, pure vanilla extract, and three drops of blue food coloring and mix to see what the color looks like. Add additional food coloring if desired to get the blue hue you’re looking for!
Next beat in the flour, baking powder, and salt until just combined to finish the base of the cookie dough!
With a wooden spoon, add 1/3 cup of white chocolate chips, 1/3 cup mini Oreos, and 1/3 cup of the mini chocolate cookies to the large mixing bowl and stir in – breaking up the cookies just a bit with your spoon.
Tip!
If you are using full-size Oreos and chocolate chip cookies, I recommend pulsing them in a food processor or breaking them up into small chunks before you add them to the mixing bowl. If you add them and use the mixer (or the spoon) to break them up too much, you may end up over mixing the cookie monster cookie dough!
2 – chill the cookie dough
If you want giant cookies (like Cookie Monster would probably love), divide the cookie dough into six equal balls and place them onto a lightly greased baking sheet. Or if you want smaller cookies, you can do 12 smaller cookies (about one tablespoon) as well!
Break up the remaining mini Oreos and mix them in with the rest of the mini chocolate chip cookies and white chocolate chips.
Gently top the cookie dough balls with a sprinkling of the cookie mixture and press in gently so it stays while the cookies are chilling.
Put the baking sheet of covered cookie dough balls into the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
3 – Bake and Serve the Cookies
After the cookies have set in the refrigerator, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
For large cookie, bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until the edges are golden and the middle is still soft. For smaller cookies, start checking them around 12 minutes.
After the cookies are finished baking, let them cool for five minutes on the baking sheet before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.
Serve as soon as they have cooled ideally with a glass of milk!
Tips & tricks
No need to keep cookies refrigerated. Keep cookies in an airtight container on at room temperature for up to 5 days.
You can freeze them! If you’re lucky enough to have any left, store them in a freezer-safe container or freezer bag. Do this before or after baking, it’s up to you.
Swap the white chocolate chips for regular milk chocolate chips if you like. Or use half and half.
Make a smaller cookie monster cookie. This recipe for cookie monster cookies makes 6 big cookies, but if you want 12, just make them regular-sized cookies. Use a small or medium cookie scoop for even sizes.
Food coloring. While blue gel food coloring is recommended, liquid food coloring can be used, just go slow when adding the coloring because liquid food coloring can have a strong taste.
Bring the cookie monster cookies to life! Tack on some edible googly eyes for extra fun on your sweet treats!
Recipe FAQs
Why did my cookies go flat?
There could be several reasons! The culprit could be anything from not measuring your dry ingredients properly, to not giving the cookies proper chill time (melted butter is not your friend), or not lining your sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat, which helps to prevent too much spreading. You also want to make sure you’re using fresh baking powder.
What is the secret to chewy cookies?
Brown sugar is key to providing extra moisture so that your cookies are nice and moist. This and an extra egg yolk are foolproof!
Can you use salted butter?
You can. Not all salted butter is created equal so it’s harder to control the amount you add into your dough, but go ahead and use it if that’s what you have. Just be sure to omit the added salt from the recipe.
