Welcome to week 5 in our Fitness Jumpstart 8-week series! If you know nothing about the 8-week #fitnessjumpstart series I’m hosting with Heidi from Happiness is Homemade or why we’re doing it, start with this post then come back and get this week’s workout and meal plan! And if you missed out on weeks 1-4, no worries. You can still check out all of our previous week’s guides! The basic idea is that each Monday Heidi and I will be sharing a healthy meal plan, a workout plan, and giving away some amazing prizes along the way! And this week I’m sharing the best workout playlist, a compilation of my favorite workout songs!
Last week was one of my best weeks yet. My son is beginning to feel much more comfortable in the gym daycare, so we actually went to the gym twice. That means two great runs + two showers, which is a big deal in my book! Eating was a little tougher because my husband was out of the country all week and when it’s just me at home, well I tend to not want to cook a big meal. Lots of green smoothies, salads, and simple soups for lunch last week. I’m excited to get back into eating real meals this week and can’t wait to try out everything on this week’s menu!
Let’s jump right in with this week’s workouts!
Thank you to Newegg for providing me with a Pro-Form Hybrid Trainer to try out for my training! All opinions, content, and ideas are 100% my honest and my own. This post also contains affiliate links for your convenience.
This week I want to talk to you about the importance of cross-training. I know it seems like if you’re running all the time that you’re getting plenty of exercise and that cross-training isn’t necessary. Or maybe you just want to run every single day instead of doing anything else. I’m here to tell you that both cross-training and doing strength training can do amazing things for your body. At some point your body gets used to running and it’s no longer a challenge anymore no matter how far or long you go. By adding in cross-training, you’re mixing things up on your body, which challenges your body and helps build and tone muscles that running may not touch.
I can tell you right now that no matter how often I run, I’m still sore after playing competitive volleyball for a few hours or going to a spinning class because they just use completely different muscles than when when I run. There are tons of different things that you can do for cross-training from doing one of your favorite workout DVDs, to going to an aerobic class at the gym, to playing a competitive sport. Or you can also just jump on one of your favorite workout machines like an elliptical or bike and get a great workout that way as well. The key is to just keep mixing things up and trying out different things to work all of your muscles.
I love going to the gym but getting there every day with a two-year-old is just not possible. Since going to the gym every day isn’t possible for me, we’ve created our own little gym in the basement with a treadmill, rower, weights, and my most recent purchase from the Newegg Marketplace, the Pro-Form Hybrid Trainer. One of the main reasons that I chose this over some other cardio in the Newegg Marketplace was because it actually provides two cardio workouts (stationary bike and elliptical) in one single machine. I live in a fairly small townhouse so space is at a premium and the 2-in-1 hybrid trainer gives me two workouts in the space of one! Even my toddler joined in on the fun of putting this baby together.
And even better, you actually don’t even have to plug it in (just uses batteries) so you can really put it wherever you want without having to worry about if you’re close enough to an outlet or if your kids are going to trip over the cord. It’s the perfect piece of equipment for someone looking for a variety of workouts without a lot of space.
Last week’s workout guide included two days of 45 minutes of cross-training. One of those days I spent trying out the elliptical function on the Hybrid Trainer and the other day, you guessed it, I used the stationary bike function. With 14 workout apps built into the machine, I was able to pick one that was perfect for me and the workout I wanted to do that day. I love being able to hit a button and have the machine run my workout for me. Sometimes a little break from thinking is all you need and the Pro-Form Hybrid Trainer is perfect for a stress-free workout. You can check out more details about the Pro-Form Hybrid Trainer along with a ton of other awesome workout equipment in the Newegg Marketplace, a great resource for purchasing fitness equipment and electronics like my Garmin Forerunner 220.
To help you out with your cross-training this week, I’ve put together a playlist of my favorite workout songs because everyone knows that listening to the best workout songs can make a workout just a little bit easier. Or at least more fun. These aren’t my favorite running songs (those are here!); these are songs that I love to listen to while I’m doing cardio. What would you add to the list?
