Thanks to Brookstone for sponsoring this post. I seriously love the Perfect Bake and am so excited to share my honest opinion of it with you all! This post also contains affiliate links to the app so if you do decide to buy it, I may receive some money to add to my party supply budget!
I’ve always heard that to bake perfectly you should bake by weight, not by size measurement. I pretty much ignored that advice until this week when I was given the chance to try out the Brookstone Perfect Bake App-Controlled Smart Baking.
You guys, this thing is amazing. At first glance it looks just like a digital scale, which is great and all, but it is so much more than that. It’s a scale, cooking teacher, cookbook, time, and so much more all rolled into one awesome product. But enough of my rambling about how awesome it is, let me show you instead.
The package comes with a scale, a little stand for your phone or tablet, an oven thermometer, and three mixing bowls. And those bowls aren’t just ordinary bowls – they’re actually designed to work specifically with the app. More on that in a minute.
You just download the Perfect Bake App (available on devices that use iOs 6.0 or Android 4.1 or higher) and plug the cord from the scale directly to your device. Then, the fun begins.
The app includes hundreds of recipes to choose from but since this was my first time using the Perfect Bake, I decided to take the advice of the app and started with one of the getting started recipes – Coconut Macaroons. Once you click on a recipe, it takes you to the ingredients so you can get everything prepped and ready to go. Along with the ingredients, you’ll also see a list of the cookware you’ll need for the recipe including which of those awesome bowls you’ll need. And if you’d really rather only make one dozen cookies rather than the two dozen it calls for, you can switch up the quantities right on the first screen and everything is automatically adjusted.
Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, you click on the Bake! button and the app will take you step by step through everything you need to do to bake the perfect recipe. And when I say everything, I mean everything. For me, the first step was to measure out the shredded coconut in the green bowl. The app is perfectly designed to know how much the green bowl weighs so that when you add the coconut to the bowl, it’s just weighing the coconut and not the bowl. And as you add the coconut, the app shows you how much more you need to add to get to the perfect measurement. Once you get the perfect amount, it dings and gives you a checkmark so you know you can move on to the next step. How cool is that? I wish I had someone giving me a checkmark every time I finished a task all day long.
After I measured out all of my ingredients in the appropriate bowl, the app told me to beat my egg mixture together for 30 seconds. And right on the screen popped up a thirty second timer. I told you it was the all-in-one app.
With my mixing done, it was time to fold the coconut into the egg mixture. For beginners or if you’re just not sure what an instruction means, there’s this cool help feature that teaches you what it means to fold something in a recipe including a super helpful video.
After everything was mixed together, the app instructed me to divide the batter into 10 perfect portions. But wait for it, it actually helps you to divide them into perfect portions by having you put your cookie sheet directly onto the scale and weighing the batter as you put it on the cookie sheet. How perfect would that be for something like French macarons that you want all the exact same size? After you portion things out, the app tells you how hot and how long to cook your cookies, and of course provides you with the handy dandy timer I already mentioned.
I’ve never made coconut macaroons before and look how yummy they turned out. I’m sure they wouldn’t be this delicious if I’d tried to cook them without the Perfect Bake.
Decorating baked goods is an art but the actual baking really is a science, and I’ve definitely found that if I weigh my ingredients my results are way better than if I just carelessly dump in “cups” of flour. And now that I’ve found my new best baking friend in the Perfect Bake, I can’t wait to bake even more because it makes the “measuring” process so easy. Next on my list to try is the Red Velvet Mug Cake, I mean how good does that sound right about now?
The Perfect Bake would also be a fantastic gift for anyone who loves to bake or for you to buy yourself to use with your family. It makes baking so easy that everyone will have fun baking together, and it’s great to teach the littles one about baking without worrying about ending up with cookies with too much flour. And it’s full of great recipe ideas with things that most people will have in their pantry so next time you feel like baking, you can just pull out your Perfect Bake and whip up the perfect chocolate cupcakes without ever leaving your house.
