Ingredients in ham and cheese bunnies
Ingredient Notes
- Puff pastry roll – for this particular recipe, you’ll need a refrigerated puff pastry roll, not the frozen puff pastry sheets I typically use in things like my ham and cheese Christmas trees!
- Ham slices – any type of ham deli meat works – brown sugar, honey baked. etc.
- Cheese slices – I like these with Swiss cheese, but you can also use cheddar or really anything you like with ham!
- Dijon mustard – stick with dijon rather than regular yellow mustard. The stronger dijon flavor works great with the ham and cheese. You could also omit the mustard altogether if you want to make these a bit more kid friendly (or have pickier eaters) and just stick with butter!
How to make Ham and Cheese appetizers
As I said earlier, these are a breeze to make. Read the instructions and the full recipe card below to make sure you know what you’re doing, but it’s pretty straightforward!
1 – make a ham and cheese roll
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees so it’s preheated as soon as your ham and cheese bunnies are ready to baked. You can also line a baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper if you want to avoid the mess on the baking sheets!
Remove the puff pastry from the package and roll it out like if you were rolling out cinnamon roll dough. No need to actually use a rolling pin and make it any thinner, just roll it out so it’s completely spread out.
Add the ham and cheese in layers on top of the rolled out puff pastry.
Then starting on the long side (like these homemade pepperoni rolls), tightly roll the pastry up to create a ham and cheese roll.
2 – shape the ham and cheese bunnies
Slice the ham and cheese roll into twelve equal pieces. Take six of those spirals and put them on the prepared baking sheet.
Take the other six and cut them in half using a sharp knife. Pinch the bottom of the cut halves closed (to make small circles), then carefully place the halves above the full spirals on the baking sheet, making bunny ears on either side of the top of roll.
3 – brush with butter and Bake
Melt the butter in the microwave or on the stove. Then stir the mustard into the butter to create a mustard butter.
Brush the mustard butter on top of the bunnies using a silicone basting brush.
Bake the entire tray of ham and cheese bunnies for 15-20 minutes or until the bunnies are golden brown.
4 – Serve the ham and cheese snacks
Serve the bunnies warm on their own or with additional mustard butter (or honey butter is also great) for dipping. They’re also tasty at room temperature, but I always prefer things warm!
Additional Tips & Storage Information
Mix up the meat and cheese! Try any of your favorites or make them with something you know your guests will enjoy!
Sprinkle with fresh parsley as soon as they get out of the oven for a little extra garnish.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
Recipe FAQs
Can I make these ahead of time?
Yes! Simply assemble the bunnies and place them on a baking sheet, then wrap the baking sheet with plastic wrap until you’re ready to bake!
Can I add a sauce to the bunnies?
Adding a sauce will cause the bunnies to leak more. I recommend serving them with a sauce on the side to dip into instead.
What’s the best way to reheat these?
When you are ready to eat the leftovers, simply place them back in a cold oven and preheat it to 350 degrees. Let the ham and cheese bunnies come to temperature with the oven and they’ll be just like when you first made them! You can also pop them in the microwave but they won’t be as crisp that way.
