This homemade hot chocolate recipe is simple, healthier than regular hot chocolate, and perfect to drink first thing in the morning to wake you up! It’s a popular healthy hot chocolate recipe and a great alternative to the typical hot chocolate mix you buy at the store.
Ever since doing our Whole 30 challenge this summer, we’ve been trying to make healthier choices around here. I don’t drink coffee, but I’m a huge hot chocolate fan. And giving up hot chocolate forever just wasn’t in the cards for me.
So with the help of my uber-healthy husband, came up with this yummy sort of healthy homemade hot chocolate recipe that’s really tasty as well! And best of all, unlike normal hot chocolate that makes my stomach growl after drinking a cup, this didn’t phase my stomach one bit.
How to Make Hot Chocolate
There are a handful of different ways you can make this hot chocolate – on the stove, in the crockpot, or in the microwave. I went with the simplest, so I can make a mug full every morning to go with breakfast. I created the recipe for two mugs full of hot chocolate, so feel free to half as necessary if you’re just making hot chocolate for one.
First up, warm up your milk. Or if you want to go dairy-free, warm up your almond milk or cashew milk in the microwave. My husband swears cashew milk is even sweeter in this than regular milk, but I prefer the regular milk.
Once your milk is warm, pour in all of your ingredients. The secret ingredients that make this so yummy are the combination of dark + milk cocoa, Vital Proteins collagen peptides (they do wonders for your skin, nails, and hair!!), coconut sugar instead of regular white sugar, and a pinch of salt. The salt + dark chocolate cocoa gives this an incredibly rich flavor that I absolutely love.
And if you don’t think you need an entire container of collagen peptides, think again. You can use them in a ton of different things like this butternut squash soup, these donuts, this berry smoothie recipe, and so much more. They’re flavorless, odorless, and colorless so you can really add them to anything. We use them daily!
‘
Mix the ingredients until totally combined. If anything is clumping, just put the mug back in the microwave for another 30 seconds or so until the ingredients just meld into the milk.
Stir and top with marshmallows or whipped cream if you want, but know those aren’t the healthiest options. Healthy no, but yummy yes! Or drink it straight, whatever you prefer. If you want it sweeter, add a bit more coconut sugar until you get to your preferred sweetness.
