Fairy bread is a fun snack that kids will absolutely love! It’s super easy to make, looks beautiful, and is a nice tasty treat! Next time you’re looking for a colorful treat for a birthday party, add this fairy bread recipe to your menu!
Fairy bread is an Australian treat that combines buttered bread with sprinkles to create a yummy snack perfect for the kids! I recently made it as one of my princess party ideas along with some toothpicks to create “Fairy Godmother” wands, and it was a hit with all the littles!
The best thing about fairy bread is that while it’s an Australian snack, it’s something that everyone around the world can enjoy with this simple recipe!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Only 3 ingredients – this fairy bread only includes three ingredients, making it so easy to make! It also means the quality of those ingredients matters!
- Colorful and fun – just like so many of our recipes, fairy bread looks like something fairies would eat with its colorful sprinkles!
- Versatile – you can easily transform fairy bread into the perfect party food with a simple cookie cutter, making it a great addition to any kid-friendly menu!
Ingredients
Ingredient Notes
- Bread – This is best made with just regular soft white bread. The soft white bread combined with the butter and sprinkles is what makes this recipe really shine. You could do it with other thin loaves of bread, but I recommend staying away from anything with seeds, spice, or flavoring.
- Butter – as I mentioned before, there are only three ingredients in this recipe so the quality of the butter is really important. You want to ideally use European butter like Kerrygold, not the cheap stuff. You also want to make sure the butter is super soft and spreadable!
- Rainbow sprinkles – I use rainbow because my princess party was rainbow but you could do this with any color you want. Just make sure that you are using nonpareil sprinkles (the tiny little circle ones), not the long dots or sugar crystals or anything else. The nonpareil ones stick the best to the butter for coating the bread!
How to Make Fairy Bread
This recipe is so simple and fun kids can help make it, or they can just enjoy the spoils after!
The first thing you need to do is make sure your butter is really soft so you can spread it on the bread. If it’s not super soft, it won’t spread and you’ll end up with chunks of butter and chunks of sprinkles instead of the covered look you’re going for.
Once your butter is ready, spread butter on one side of the bread evenly, making sure to coat the entire piece of bread (other than the crust).
Next, cut your bread in half diagonally to create triangles, into fun shapes with cookie cutters, or cut off the crusts if you want. Or all three!
Tip!
It’s better to cut the bread after it’s buttered so it’s easier to butter (small shapes are tough to butter) and before sprinkles so you don’t waste all of those sprinkles. It’s also much easier to manage when it’s not yet covered in sprinkles!
Once you have your desired shapes, gently spread sprinkles on top of the bread and pat them into the butter
Or if you’re making this with kids, I’ve found that placing the sprinkles in a shallow dish and letting them place the bread on the sprinkles and pressing down gently works better. Just make sure to fill in any holes if there are holes once they’re done pressing it into the sprinkles!
Repeat with any remaining pieces of bread until you’ve covered all of them with sprinkles.
And there you go – fairy bread fit for all of those fairy loving kiddos! Who has kids that would absolutely love this fun fairy treat? It’d be perfect at a once upon a time fairytale themed party or even just a birthday party with lots of color!
Expert Tips
Use cookie cutters to create fun shapes that match the theme of your party! Or for traditional Australian fairy bread, cut off the crusts and cut it in half diagonally to get triangle pieces.
Make it the day you’re planning to eat it. It doesn’t store overnight very well, honestly not even more than a few hours. It’s super simple to make, so I recommend making it within a few hours of serving.
Use European or New Zealand butter for the best taste. Anything that uses real butter in my book is delicious!

This is such an easy recipe and a fun treat for little ones. I do recommend keeping the crust on to catch the sprinkles. I first had this in Australia on my birthday but have not yet made it for my son. I will make it for him as a snack on Easter if I can find sugar free sprinkles.
