Ingredients
Ingredient Notes
- Candy melts – I used these vibrant green candy melts but you could really use any bright green color.
- Coconut oil – this is totally optional, but it does help the coating melt and gives it a nice shiny look.
- Candy hearts – I used these jumbo heart sprinkles (same ones I used for my Grinch brownies) but you could use any heart sprinkles, just try to get bigger ones!
- Cream cheese – make sure your cream cheese is at room temperature. Take it out of the fridge about an hour before you’re ready to make these, just make sure not to leave it out for longer than two hours.
How to make Grinch Christmas Balls
If you’ve ever made any sort of chocolate dipped balls – brownie balls for example – the process will likely be similar to that.
Start by lining a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Next, use a food processor to finely chop the Oreos. Make sure there are no large chunks. They should almost resemble Oreo crumbs.
In a large mixing bowl, cream the chopped Oreos and cream cheese together. You could also just add the cream cheese to the food processor and turn it on low and let the food processor combine them as well.
Scoop and roll l into 1″ balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet. If your hands get sticky during this process, wash, dry, and start rolling again.
You can put the balls into the freezer while you do the next part of the process to help keep them together while you dip, kind of like I did with these homemade nutter butters.
Using a microwave-safe bowl, melt the candy melts in the microwave on high, stirring every thirty seconds, until fully melted and smooth.
Next, add the coconut oil to the melted candy and stir well. If it’s too thick you can add a bit more oil until it is a good dipping consistency.
You could also do this same thing with a double boiler on the stove.
Now pour the melted candy into a small jar or cup that has a wide opening.
Use a toothpick to dip the balls in the melted candy and coat them completely. Tap them on the edge of the container to remove any access candy coating, then put them back on the baking sheet.
Repeat with all of the balls and once all balls are dipped, chill for 10 minutes or until the candy coating on the outside has hardened.
While the balls are chilling in the freezer, place the remaining melted candy coating in a piping bag or a plastic bag with the corner snipped off.
Once the balls are chilled, drizzle the balls with melted candy coating to give them more of a look of decorated Christmas treat balls.
Immediately place a heart sprinkle on top of the drizzles, pressing down firmly, to secure it to the Grinch Christmas balls.
Chill in the freezer for another five minutes before removing and enjoying immediately!
Expert Tips
Reheat candy melts as necessary if they start getting too hard to dip or to drizzle. You could also just melt 3/4 of the candy melts for dipping and wait and melt the last 1/4 of the melts right before drizzling.
Use a second toothpick to help place dipped balls back on the baking sheet.
Use a toothpick dipped in the candy melts to fill in any missing spots of coating.
Dab melted candy coating on the back of the heart sprinkle to help it stick better.
Store Oreo balls in the fridge until ready to enjoy. Because of the cream cheese in the mixture, these should only be out of the refrigerator for two hours.
Recipe FAQs
How big should the Grinch Christmas balls be?
Make them about 1 inch in size or smaller. If you make them larger, they will be too hard to handle and likely fall apart while dipping.
