The Best Family Card Games
I have two boys and one of those boys loves games almost as much as I do. My oldest has been really into card games – you know the type of games that use card decks or cards in some way.
And I love them because most of the time, they’re really easy to learn and quick to play. We have a lot of games and as we rotate through them, I forget how to play them a lot – so games that are easy to re-learn are key.
I already have a post on our favorite group board games so today is all about our favorite card games. Oh and also – the majority of these card games are newer games or ones that we’ve recently discovered. I didn’t include some of our old favorites like Killer Bunnies.
There are plenty of family card game options as well as just a couple that while they’re technically family friendly, I recommend for the older crew!

Card Games for Parties
These are ones that work well for a few more people or for a party! Forget the strategy, these ones are all about laughs and having fun. These are some of my personal favorite party games with cards!
- Cardjacked – this one is fun for up to 10 players and is super fun because you just never know how it’s going to turn out! The goal is to not having the lowest card but there’s a lot of drawing cards, stealing, and bluffing along the way!
- Chicken Challengers – while you can only play this game with up to 8 people, I put it in the party games category because the cards are just so funny. It’s similar to a Killer Bunnies type game where you’re playing different chicken themed cards to battle your opponents!
- Capybara Squad Battle – this hilarious game is for 4-8 people and it’s a team based social game where people have hidden roles (and have to fluff their way out of them), but one of the most fun parts is that teams and roles are constantly changing so there are lots of laughs! And the capybara cards are funny!
- Quick, Quick, Quick – if you’ve ever played the 5 second game where you have to name three things in a category in 5 seconds, that’s what this game is – but the categories are funny and the game is hilarious to play!
- Incohearent – this one is not kid-friendly, it’s like an adult version of the old school mad games, but it’s pretty funny to play. And takes about two seconds to learn!
- Match Mob – it’s hard to really card this one a card game, but it does include cards so I’m counting it! It’s a 60 second quick game – everyone gets one card and has to find someone with a matching picture first using only gestures and sounds. Anytime you can say words, things get funny!
- Bird Call – similar to the match game above, this one is super quick to play each round and also loud and hilarious! Everyone gets bird cards and has to use the bird calls on their cards to play – literally screeching, tweeting, and more!
- Take Five – this is one of those games I played once and now suggest pretty much every time I have a game night. Everyone has to try a number each round but the trick is that the information you were basing your choice off of may have changed before it’s your turn to play. It’s easy, hilarious, and great for a big group!
- Build A Bae – while this one is not kid-friendly, it’s perfect for a girls night. I picked it up at a coffee house before our book retreat and we’ve played it so many times since. You get attributes and cards to build the perfect bae – all in good fun!
- That’s Not a Hat – this memory game will have everyone cracking up as you try to not only remember what cards you have but try to bluff your way into people believing you know what you have. It’s tricky but so fun!

Up to 6 Player Card Games
These ones are some of my favorites because they’re designed for smaller groups (many of them are card games for 4 people but some go up to 6) and focus pretty much on just the cards in hand and playing those cards. They’re also typically pretty easy to learn and remember because the cards tell you everything!
- Grandpa Beck’s Games – the creator of Cover Your Assets (great game if you haven’t played) makes some great games that are perfect for small groups. They’re quick, easy to learn, and always full of beautiful cards. My personal favorites are Skull King, 3-2-1 Countdown, and Reign of the Dragoness (we played this one at our book retreat!)
- Claws Out – if you have someone who likes cats, this is a fun cat themed card game that is always changing as the game proceeds! It only takes a few minutes to learn, making it great for a family with kids!
- The Mind – this is a cooperative game where your goal is for everyone to play cards in ascending order, but you can’t speak or communicate. It’s a super popular game because it’s so unique and fun!
- Secret Recipes – I love to bake so I’m a little biased on this one but the premise of the game is that you have to gather ingredients to bake items – while trying to make sure your cards don’t get stolen! It’s kind of like Hasty Baker (a game my boys love) but an upgraded version!
- Power Hungry Pets – we play this one all the time because it’s so fast and easy! Everyone gets a card and your goal is to have the highest card at the end of the round but you’re not the only one making decisions about your cards! This one is made by the creators of Exploding Kittens if that helps!
- Moose Match Mayhem – the cards look similar to Taco Goat Cat Cheese Pizza, but this game is a matching game card that’s moose themed! It’s easy to play, great for the entire family, and just a lot fun.
- Llamas Unleashed – my boys love this game because of the cute llamas. It’s very similar to Unstable Unicorns if you’ve ever played that one (also fun) where you’re trying to collect llamas while trying to keep other people from doing so! They even have a kids version of Unstable Unicorns if you want something for the younger set!
- Critters At War – this is the only 2-player card game on this list and it’s on the list because it’s one of my favorites to play with my husband or son. It’s a 5-minute setup and quick game where the cards you play down determine how many points you can earn each round, but each card also determines the points your opponent get. We play this regularly after the kids are in bed!

Strategy Card Games
No deck building here (that’s too much for my family) but these card games do require some strategy and planning! More so than just what card do I play this turn.
- Happy Little Dinosaurs – this is honestly one of my favorite games we’ve bought over the past few years. You have to try to build your cards while avoiding the disasters. It’s easy, replayable, and one my boys really like too!
- Pepper! – this game is kind of like rummy or Phase 10 but with peppers – you have to try and spell pepper while collecting cards. It takes a little longer than some of the other games (25-30 minutes) and takes a bit more strategy and thinking but is still a lot of fun!
- Mantis – another strategic card game by the makers on Exploding Kittens – where you’re trying to gather cards using strategies like stealing, snatching, and more. The cards are beautiful and it’s an easy one to learn!
- Happy City – this German designed game will have you trying to build the happiest city in the world by buying buildings and adding to your population. It’s pretty strategic but still super easy to play – my family loves it!
- Doomlings – out of the all the games on our list, this one probably takes the longest to learn and understand the strategy but it’s also one of the most fun. And once you learn it, it’s super easy to pick up again and again! You have to collect different types and colors of cards while thinking about the points your opponents are collection – it was the Teen Vogue Best Card Game of 2024 and one of our favorite board games for good reason!

Small in Size Card Games
These ones make perfect stocking stuffers, additions to travel bags, or even just to toss in your purse to play while waiting for your dinner. We do that ALL the time so we don’t end up on screens or screaming at each other.
- Dots – just because this game is tiny doesn’t mean it isn’t a lot of fun! It’s a twist on rummy where you’re trying to match cards but it’s not just numbers – it’s dots, colors, numbers, and more dots!
- Mishy Match – have you ever tried one of those challenges where you have to read the word of the color, not the color the word is? This game plays on that idea in a party game that’s fast-moving, hilarious, and only takes like 5-10 minutes to play!
- Overlap – this is another one only takes about 5-10 minutes per round! The goal is to get rid of all of your cards (like Uno) but you have to choose how to discard your cards because your placement determines how many cards you have to pick up. Think Uno meets Tetris!
- Bees! – this bee themed card game will have you trying to collect matching food groups while watching out for bees! It’s an easy and quick one, perfect for kids who are just starting out with card games!
- Moose Master – if you like the game Curses you’ll love this game that will have you having to do silly things while you try to play the game like not being able to point your finger, naming things, and more. It’s easy to learn and hilarious!
- Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza – I struggle even putting this one on the list because everyone has it… but if you know for sure someone doesn’t, it’s a great one. Everyone has it for a reason! It’s so simple – you just play cards and say words oh and slap it there’s a match. This one ends in laughs every time.
- Llama Drama – this one plays out more like a classic playing card game than any of the others. Everyone has a hand full of llama cards and you try to be the first to play them but you have to watch out because there are rules on cards and you may not be able to play the card you want. It’s great for quick play and taking with you!
- Eye Found It – there are tons of different themes of these hidden picture style games, so pick your theme choice and grab a set for a stocking. These are perfect for playing while waiting in lines (add it to your Disney packing list) or at dinner!
- Taco vs. Burrito – this card game was created by a 7 year old and is easy to play but surprisingly fun! You have to gather cards to make the most valuable meal – all while trading, fighting, and blocking your opponents! This is a great beginner card game for the whole family!
- This or That – one of our most popular posts right now is this Thanksgiving this or that game, and this card game uses the idea of asking this or that questions in a really fun party game – all in one small box!

Classic Card Games
These may be classics but they’re classics for good reason. I’ve included a bunch of our favorites – if you don’t have these, now’s the time to stock up!
- That’s My Animal Game – my boys love these and we use this card game all the time when we’re traveling, at restaurants, and at dinner! The game is basically guessing animals using clues on the cards and a lot of fun for family lovers!
- Spot It – this card game version of i-spy is always a hit with kids and families! We bring these with us when we go places too because you don’t need a big space to play this, just enough space for a few cards on the table!
- Classic Card Set – this card pack includes a bunch of the classic card games like Go Fish, Crazy Eights, Memory, and more. It’s the perfect introduction to card games for kids and the pictures are adorable!
- War Game – you can always use playing cards to play War or you could get a cute deck like this that is a great choice for kids who may not be able to keep track of what an Ace, Queen, etc. are.
- What Would You Choose – this is a card game inspired by would you rather questions (and you know we like those), making it easier to play the classic game when you travel or even if you’re standing in line!
- Don’t Bee Last – I put this under classic games because this one is like a bee version of Slap Jack but with twists. It’s pretty hilarious and super fast!
- Guess in 10 – this card game version of 10 questions will have people trying to guess a particular character in 10! We have the Marvel and Disney versions and love them both!
- Monopoly Deal – this is actually my favorite way to play Monopoly because it’s a 15 minute card game that’s reminscient of the classic! Everyone gets properties and has to swap, steal, and draw their way to the win!
- Pandasaurus – this is one of the only cooperative games on the list, and it’s a great one. You work together to beat the game in this one!

Cards Against Humanity Type Games
Not sure how else to describe these – but these are games that you play cards that go along with some sort of theming. While I don’t recommend the original game like this – Apples to Apples – I do think these variations on the concept are a lot of fun!
I apparently couldn’t find any of our games because I took them somewhere so no picture, but these are good options if that’s your type of card game!
- Bad People – this one can be hilarious if you’re playing with the right people but note it is best for adults. You have to choose people to go along with not so good actions. They also have a Bad Kitty version that I think is funnier but just because cat memes are funny!
- Disturbed Friends – another one that’s just for the adults and is best for the right group of people, but it’s hilarious in the right situation! You ask a multiple choice question and your friends have to decide what they think you’ll answer!
- New Phone, Who Dis? This hilarious game will have you matching cards with text messages to try and create the most insane combos. If you’ve ever received a funny text message, this one is right up your alley! It also would make a great white elephant gift!
- What Do You Meme? – this is a viral game for a reason, everyone loves memes and captioning them! This game uses that concept where you have to try and add the best caption to funny memes, it’s hilarious to see what people come up with!
- Limited Vocabulary – this family-friendly game is all about coming up with hilarious ways to describe words with just the word cards you have in hand! It’s a little more thinking than say Cards Against Humanity but pretty funny to see what people come up with!
- Pick Your Poison – it’s would you rather meets Cards Against Humanity because you have to choose the best of two not great options, with everyone trying to create the worst possible options to choose from!
- Our Family is Weird – play a card then everyone has to vote on who the card best fits! It’s funny, fitting for families, and a lot of fun!
