This fun Halloween dice game will have one player trying to escape from a coven by rolling numbers faster than the coven can roll their own. It’s a super simple dice rolling game that’s made more fun by the competition aspect between the two groups and makes for a really fun Halloween activity for a Halloween party, youth group activity, and more!
Printable Halloween dice Game
As we’ve created different party games over the years, I’ve found that people love dice games so we created two brand new Halloween party games that use dice this year including this escape the coven one.
The idea is that it’s one player against a group. Both are rolling dice but the player on their own has to roll all the numbers on the dice while each member of the coven only has to roll one specific number, but every member of the coven has to do it.
We played this game a bunch of different times and figured out the odds for rolling so that you actually never know who is going to win – the individual player or the coven competing against them!
Who Is This Game best For?
- Best Ages: Older kids, teens, and adults who understand the racing portion of this game and that they’re not always going to win! It makes one of the most fun Halloween games for teens!
- Group size: This would be fun for groups of six or more and all the way up to probably 16 people.
- People with limited time and budget: This game is fast to setup, fast to learn, and fast to play. And as long as you have two dice and a playing piece, it’s totally free to play!
Supplies
Like I mentioned above, you really only need three things to play this game, making it perfect for playing last minute!
- Two dice – you’ll need one for the “witch” and one for the rest of the group. While it’s fun to use larger dice for some games, I actually recommend using regular size dice for this game so that you can move them around the circle faster.
- A pawn – you can use whatever you want for this, it just needs to be something that’ll stand up and is small enough to fit into the windows of the haunted house printout. I used a 3D printed Halloween character because we had them, but you can just grab a playing piece from any other board game or even like a coin.
- Haunted house printout – you can get it along with a printable copy of the rules for this game at the end of this post for free!
- Prizes – if you want to have prizes if the witch beats the group, go for it. I’d do something small and make sure there’s enough that everyone playing has the chance to win one. Prizes are totally optional in this game though, the fun of the game is simply playing.
How to play This halloween dice game
This game is so simple to play. I’ve included instructions below but if you want a printable version, there’s one included with the haunted house printable game board at the end of this post.
1 – Setup the Game
Choose one person from your group to be the player trying to escape the coven during the first round. Have that person sit at a center seat of a table (or just on the ground) so that everyone can see their rolling and give them the haunted house printout, a pawn, and a die.
Everyone else should sit in the other seats at the table or on a ground forming a circle, making the coven. Give one person in the coven a dice.
2 – Play the Game
When you say go, the race is on. The group and player are trying to complete their individual tasks (outlined below) first. Whichever group completes their task first wins the game.
Individual player
The player rolls their one dice continuously trying to roll the numbers 1 to 6 in order As they roll the numbers, they move the pawn through the haunted house. So for example, when they roll a 1 they’ll move it onto the window with a 1. When they roll a 2, they move it to the 2 window.
Keep going trying to roll the numbers in order as fast as possible. If the individual player can roll the numbers 1 to 6 in order before the coven all rolls a six, they win.
Coven (group of players)
The first player in the group rolls the die and if they roll a 1 to 5, they pass the die to the next person in the group who then rolls. If they roll a 6, they pass the die to the next player and immediately leave the circle.
Keep passing the die around the circle with everyone rolling one time then passing it to the next person. As coven members roll a 6, they leave the circle. If everyone in the coven rolls a six before the individual player gets through the haunted house, they win.
Rule Variations Based on group Size
In order to keep the odds fairly even, make these adjustments based on the size of your group!
- 7 or less players – the individual player rolls the numbers 1 to 6 to win and use just one die for the coven.
- 8-11 players – the individual players roll the numbers 1 to 6 and then 6 back to 1 to win. Use just one die for the coven.
- 12+ players – the individual players roll the numbers 1 to 6 and then 6 back to 1 to win. Give the coven two dice that are going around the circle in opposite directions. Alternately, you could just break into two groups and play two different games at the same time.
If it feels like the coven or the individual is still constantly winning (because your group is passing dice really slowly or something), you can make any further adjustments you might need.
How to Win Escape the Coven
If the individual player can get all the way through the haunted house first by rolling the numbers 1 to 6 in order, they win. If everyone in the coven rolls a six first, they win.
Once the first round is over, switch the individual rolling with someone in the coven and play again. Keep going until everyone in the coven has had a chance to
Prize ideas
If you want to give out prizes, I like to give them to the individual if they beat the coven. You don’t want to reward the coven every time they win because it’s a much larger group, but it’s fun to reward the individual if they can actually escape the coven!
These would make fun small prizes for the winning players. Candy is always good too!

- Halloween bracelets – break up the set to have prizes for different people!
- Emotional Support Ghosts – these are just too cute!
- Fuzzy Halloween socks – love the colors on these!
- Boo basket stuffers – this set is full of lots of cute ideas that’d make great prizes! Really anything that’d go in a boo bucket would be great!
- Halloween party favors – things like these temporary tattoos or any of these Halloween trinkets would be great for kids and cheap prizes.
Game FAQs
Do you take turns rolling the dice?
No, both teams are rolling continuously and trying to roll their numbers as fast as possible. It’s a fast game with fast rolling, not a taking turns kind of game. If you were taking turns, the odds would be almost impossible for the individual player to win.
Helpful Tips
Make sure the individual player is sitting toward the center of the table so everyone can see where they’re at. We played a round with them at the head of the table and no one could see where they were in the house, so it wasn’t nearly as fun for everyone.
Let everyone have a chance to be the individual rolling. If you don’t think you’ll have time to let everyone be the individual, pick a name out of a hat randomly or something similar so no one feels like they were slighted.
