A couple of weeks ago I mentioned on Facebook that I received a box of FloraCraft® Foam Heads, and I am so excited to show you how I transformed those foam heads into the coolest superhero treat holders and an awesome superhero party activity. It’s my favorite foam project since I made these foam party banners!
I know it’s almost Halloween, but I was definitely not expecting to find a box full of foam craft heads on my doorstep. Kind of freaky right? My Instagram followers all thought they would be perfect for a Halloween project, but I had different ideas.

- FloraCraft® Foam Heads
- Foam safe spray paint (I used Designer Master®)
- Masks
- FloraCraft® StyroCutter
- Small and heavy candy, pennies, rocks, or other weighted item
- Packing tape
And here’s how you do it.
First, you need to spray paint your heads. I noted it in the supply list, but you need to buy foam safe spray paint. I learned the hard way that regular spray paint reacts poorly and actually eats away the foam. If you want to make a bad guy alley like the one below, use regular spray paint. If you don’t want them to scare the kids, use foam safe spray paint. I did two coats to give them as much color as possible.
Let your heads dry. Once you’re done, we’re going to move onto weighting the heads so that they don’t fall over when you put all those yummy treats in them. This is where the FloraCraft® StyroCutter comes in. I first used a StyroCutter when I met the awesome team from FloraCraft® at SNAP in April, and I had to have one. You guys, this thing basically cuts the foam by melting it with a hot wire. For those of us who hate the sound of styrofoam and can’t stand cutting it regularly, the StyroCutter is an absolute life saver. Anyway, you’re going to use the StyroCutter to cut a large hole in the bottom of the heads, making sure to stay away from the sides.
Once you have holes in the bottom of each of your heads, you’re going to fill them with those candies or pennies and then tape those babies in there. I happened to have some leftover M&M’s from my apple party and used those. This will keep your heads weighted down and stop them from toppling over with the weight of the cake pops. Brilliant right?
Okay, we’re almost done. Now that all of your heads are nicely weighted, pick out one of your masks and place it securely on the foam head. You can either buy masks like I did at Michaels or you can use this Cutesy Craft tutorial to make your own.
Alright, last step. Now you’re going to put your pops into the heads. Since the foam heads are more dense than regular styrofoam, you can’t just stick them right in like if you were using a styrofoam ball. Instead, use that handy dandy StyroCutter to cut small holes for your pops. Stick the pops in the holes and you’ve got some awesome superhero treat holders for your next superhero party!
And if you didn’t read my instructions carefully and used spray paint that isn’t safe for foam, don’t throw those heads away. Use them for a bad guy alley at your superhero party and let the kids fight the “bad guys” with silly string, balls, etc. The kids had a blast, and the foam heads were “bad” enough without being too creepy!
