This easy calzone recipe is perfect for making mini calzones for parties or for little hands to eat for dinner. They only take minutes to make and will be a hit with all ages and all taste buds!
Easy Calzone Recipe
I’m a big sucker for pizza – all things pizza really. Pizza loaf, mini pizza pies, even fruit pizza.
But know what I’m ever more of a sucker for? Calzones. Any time there are calzones on a menu, I go for those instead of a regular pizza. Well those and pepperoni rolls.
With all of the parties that I host, I wanted to figure out a way to make an easy calzone recipe that would work for parties since a great big calzone really isn’t a good way to go for a party buffet.
These mini calzones are the perfect bite-size calzone for any party, making them a great appetizer for something like a Super Bowl party, basketball party, or really any time you want to serve delicious finger foods.
Calzone Ingredients
The ingredients for these calzones can be as varied as pizza toppings. The only real things you need to have include:
- Pizza dough
- Mozzarella cheese
- Your choice of pizza toppings
- Pizza sauce for dipping
How to Make A Calzone
1 – Make or buy your pizza dough.
2 – Roll and cut out your pizza dough.
I recommend rolling to 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch thick depending on how thick you like your calzone crust. I prefer a good amount of crust so I went with 1/2 inch thick.
Once the pizza dough is rolled to your desired thickness, use a biscuit cutter to cut circles in the dough. I use this biscuit cutter but you could really use any biscuit cutter, circle cookie cutter, or even the bottom of a glass that’s about the same size.
3 – Fill the muffin tins.
Spray muffin tins with an olive oil or avocado oil spray to help them not stick to the pan. Or use a silicone muffin tin like this one and no spray necessary.
Once the muffin tins are prepped, press one circle of pizza dough into each muffin tin making sure to press it to the bottom and along the sides.
4 – Add toppings.
This is where you can get creative. We just added pepperoni, black olives, and mozzarella cheese because those are my personal favorite pizza toppings but add whatever toppings you want.
Need topping ideas? Check out all of the varieties of these english muffin pizzas we made and use those combinations inside the calzones.
Or get even more creative than just a pepperoni calzone and go with something like buffalo chicken calzones instead! Those would be delicious alongside these buffalo chicken roll ups for Super Bowl Sunday!
One tip – add a good amount of toppings but not too much or you’ll have a really hard time closing and sealing the calzones.
Oh and make sure any toppings you’re using are fully cooked already. You’re not going to cook these long enough to actually cook food, just heat it up and melt the cheese.
5 – Fold and seal.
Fold the dough over gently and press to seal the edges together, closing the calzones.
6 – Bake
Lastly, bake in a pre-heated oven for 12 minutes at 450 degrees F or until golden brown and dough is cooked through.
Once they’re baked, serve them warm with a bowl full of pizza sauce for dipping! Or if you went with something more creative like buffalo chicken calzones, then maybe serve with both pizza sauce and ranch dressing!
