This baked apple crumble is a delicious fall treat the entire family will love. Soft apples with cinnamon are topped with a sugary crumb topping for one delicious soft and sugary apple dessert.
There’s just something about an old-fashioned apple dessert that screams fall. Now that fall is less than a week away, I’m ready to scream.
Scream fall that it is! I’m ready to throw an apple party, eat pumpkin cream cheese muffins for breakfast, and play Halloween games daily until October 31st!
And since we’re screaming fall, I thought I’d share this fun spin on an old-fashioned apple crumble recipe. Because there’s just something about apples that says fall is here!
You’ll love this recipe because:brean
- The filling is both soft and crunchy with the addition of the sliced almonds.
- The cinnamon flavor combines perfectly with the flavor of the apples.
- It’s super easy to make – even the actual crumble part!
Ingredients
Ingredient Notes
- Apples – I recommend using a sweeter red apple in this recipe rather than a tart green variety, but feel free to try any! Also, you can peel your apples if you want to ad an extra step, but they work great with peels on.
- Butter – make sure to melt your butter completely to help get a crispier crumble topping
- Almonds – you can either get pre-chopped almonds, slivered almonds, or regular almonds and chop them yourself
- Raisins – if you don’t like raisins, you can omit these completely
Instructions
Wash your apples then core and cube them. As I noted above, you can peel them if you really want, but the extra step isn’t necessary. Once they’re chopped, place them in a large, ideally round, baking dish.
Add the sugar, cinnamon, raisins, almonds, and lemon juice and combine everything together in the baking dish.
Mix it all together well with a wooden spoon or spatula. You want to make sure that the mixture is evenly spread throughout the baking dish and throughout the apples.
If your butter isn’t already melted, melt it now. Mix the flour, sugar, pinch of salt, and melted butter together.
Stir with a fork then knead gently with your hands. You want to knead it until the ingredients all come together into a crumble dough but don’t over mix. Once they’re together, move on.
Spread the crumble topping over the apple mix, still in the baking dish, in an even layer.
Bake in the oven at 350 degrees F for 30-40 minutes or until the crumble on top is golden brown and your apples are cooked and soft.
Serve warm either plain or with fresh whipped cream or a la mode with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top (definitely my favorite option).
Expert Tips
Don’t peel your apples if you want to add a bit more nutritious value to the apple crumble and save time.
Melt the butter to make the crumble topping crispier.
Replace the raisins with craisins or dried cranberries for a tart variation on the dish.
Double the recipe and cook it in a 9×13 pan to feed a crowd rather than just a family.
Knead until the crumble comes together but not any longer. Once it’s together, move on and place it on top of the apple filling.
Recipe FAQs
What apple is best for apple crumble?
I prefer a sweet apple like a Honeycrisp or gala in this apple crumble, but if you want something more tart – a Granny Smith or Golden Delicious would work too.
Does apple crumble need to be refrigerated?
I recommend refrigerating the apple crumble. You can leave it in the baking dish and cover with foil or plastic wrap or remove it from the dish and store in an airtight container for up to a week.
Why is my crumble topping not crunchy?
Make sure your butter is completely melted before combining with the flour and sugar. If it’s still super crumbly and doesn’t come together, add just a little bit more butter until it reaches the desired consistency.
What to serve with apple crumble?
Apple crumble would be a great dessert to go with this white bean chicken chili, homemade chicken noodle soup, or even something more simple like sheet pan teriyaki chicken.
