This four-ingredient hot chocolate dip takes just minutes to make and will be the hit of any winter party! Serve it up with graham crackers, cookies, pretzels, or fruit for a delicious dessert dip for chocolate lovers!

strawberry in a hot chocolate dip

Is there anything better than a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter day?

If you love hot chocolate, you’ll absolutely love this hot chocolate dip. And if you don’t like hot chocolate well don’t worry, you’ll probably like this dip too as long you like chocolate.

It’s a creamy and delicious dessert dip that gets a rich chocolate flavor from the addition of hot chocolate mix.

It would make a great addition to pretty much any of these Christmas party themes, tasted great served with these sugar cookie bites, and be a hit with both kids and adults.

There’s a reason it’s gone viral on TikTok! People of all ages are already saying they want to try it at their Christmas parties this year!

And I hope you do too. It’s so easy that you might as well try it – who knows, it may be your new favorite dessert dip. If it’s not, there’s always this brownie batter dip you can try too.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Simple – with just 4-ingredients (five, but the fifth is optional), this really couldn’t get much easier!
  • Creamy chocolate flavor – the hot chocolate mix gives this dip a rich and creamy flavor without any of the grittiness you might expect from a mix.
  • Versatile – top it with marshmallow bits, top it with whipped cream, top it with sprinkles – do what you want with this and it’ll still be yummy!

Ingredients

Ingredient Notes

  • Hot chocolate mix – you need about 1 cup of your favorite hot chocolate mix. If you use Swiss Miss like I did, the packets are 1.38oz each, so you’ll need four packets. Other brands tend to have smaller packet sizes though so pay attention and make sure it’s actually 1 cup of mix, not just four packets.
  • Marshmallow fluff – I’ve used both marshmallow fluff and marshmallow creme in this and they both work.
  • Cool Whip – ideally you want the Extra Creamy stuff but this also tastes fine with regular stuff, extra creamy is just better. Make sure it’s thawed before mixing in.
  • Mini marshmallows – these are optional, but I think they add a nice touch to the dip. You can either make it with or without these, totally up to you.
  • Marshmallow bits – I like to put these on top but again if you can’t find them, it’s not going to ruin the dip. They just add a nice little crunch. These are the same thing I used in my s’mores cookies and my hot chocolate bombs. If you can’t find them in stores, I bought these ones on Amazon and they were great!

Instructions

If you can make a cup of hot chocolate, you can make this hot chocolate dip.

Okay fine, it’s not quite that easy but it’s pretty close.

Start by combining your hot chocolate mix with your heavy cream in either a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer. Beat until the hot chocolate mix totally dissolves and your chocolate becomes thick and smooth.

Then add the marshmallow fluff and Cool Whip into the chocolate mixture and mix gently. Keep mixing until it’s well combined and a lighter color.

If you want to add mini marshmallows, you can do it now if you’re going to be serving the dip soon. If you’re not serving the dip soon, wait until just before serving to fold in the mini marshmallows so they don’t get soft and gooey.

Top the hot chocolate dip with marshmallow bits and sprinkles (if you want) to make it a bit more festive.

Then serve with your choice of dippers. I like graham crackers, shortbread cookies, pretzels, and fresh fruit personally. But pretty much anything you would dip in chocolate fondue, you could dip in this and it would be good.

Or eat it by the spoon, I won’t judge.

Expert Tips

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days. If you know you’re going to make this ahead of time and refrigerate, add the mini marshmallows, marshmallow bits, and sprinkles just before serving.

Half the recipe by simply cutting the amount of each ingredient in half. The recipe halves and doubles really well.

Recipe FAQs

Can you substitute the heavy cream?

The heavy cream and hot chocolate mix mixed together is what gives this hot chocolate dip its base, so I do not recommend substituting it with anything else. If you want something without cream, try this cream cheese fruit dip instead.

Where do you find marshmallow bits?

Marshmallow bits can typically be found in stores in the baking aisle by regular mini marshmallows. If you can’t find them in stores, you can buy on Amazon here.

What do you serve with hot chocolate dip?

Cookies, graham crackers, pretzels, fruit, and really anything else that would be good with chocolate.

Oh. my. Goodness!!! I need more stars! I made this at Christmas for a family get together. Everyone there wanted the recipe and I know 3 of them made it within the week for holiday gatherings and one gave the recipe to several family members. Creamy, delicious, chocolaty and very easy to make. This was a big hit with young and old and is already on the menu for next Christmas.
