I crave biscuits more than I can admit. Whether it be to make biscuits and gravy (this is the best sausage gravy ever), breakfast sandwiches, or even to use as the buns in my copycat chicken minis, sometimes you just need biscuits.

But let’s face it, making fluffy biscuits or homemade buttermilk biscuits can be a pain. You have to make the biscuit dough, cut in cold butter, and then you still have to cut out the biscuits using a biscuit cutter.

There’s no such pain with this sour cream biscuits recipe. You just mix, drop the dough onto the baking sheet, and bake!

If you want an easy recipe for biscuits, look no further. If you want something more complicated, you can try these homemade drop biscuits instead.

Ingredient Notes

  1. Sour cream – any brand or type of sour cream will work for these. I always recommend full flat so you can get the richness of the biscuits but light sour cream will work in a pinch.
  2. Butter – both salted or unsalted will work in these three ingredient biscuits.
  3. Self-rising flour – make your own self-rising flour by combining two cups of all purpose flour, one tablespoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Regular all purpose flour will not work in this recipe.

Note!

This biscuit recipe uses three basic ingredients, but it’s important that you stick to those three ingredients for these biscuits to work. If you switch out any of the three ingredients, you may end up with something more like mush than a delicious Southern biscuit.

How to make Sour Cream Biscuits

These moist sour cream biscuits are as simple as mixing the ingredients and baking. They’re pretty fail proof, which makes them the perfect addition to any meal, including busy weeknight dinners!

1 – Make The Biscuit Dough

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Melt the two sticks of butter in a large microwave safe bowl in the microwave.
  3. Whisk sour cream into the melted butter. You can do this by hand or you can use a hand mixer but make sure the butter and sour cream are smooth before moving onto the next step.
  1. Gently stir in the flour to the sour cream and butter until fully combined. Careful not to over mix or you’ll end up with one dry biscuit.
  2. Set aside while you prepare the muffin tin.

2 – Bake The Biscuits

  1. Line or lightly grease the muffin pan, making sure to get all the way around each muffin cup. If you want to make sour cream mini biscuits, you can use mini muffin tins instead.
  2. Spoon the batter into each cup until each one is about 2/3 of the way full.

  1. Put the biscuits into the preheated oven and cook them for about 20-23 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  2. Allow the biscuits to cool for five minutes before you remove them from the muffin tin. Then move to a cooling rack to cool completely.

What to Serve with Sour Cream Biscuits

Serve these flaky biscuits immediately while they’re still warm! They’re good topped with most things but some of our favorite things include:

  • Strawberry freezer jam
  • White sausage gravy
  • White chicken chili or Cincinnati chili
  • Apple cider glazed ham
  • Fettuccine alfredo

Using full-fat sour cream and salted butter will yield the best results.

To avoid over-mixing the dough, consider making the dough by hand in a large bowl rather than a stand mixer.

Store in an airtight container for up to five days at room temperature.
