This fun Halloween game will have teams competing to get the pawn to their side amidst the chaos of rolling dice and switching teams throughout the game. You never know who is going to win until the pawn gets to one of the end lines!

Zombie Halloween Game
Every year I plan the classroom Halloween party, help with our church’s trunk or treat, and have a Halloween party for my own family at home. That means I am always having to come up with new Halloween party games so we aren’t playing the same thing year after year!
Last year our get a turkey Thanksgiving dice game went super viral, so I thought I’d take the concept of everyone rolling dice at the same time and turn it into a chaotic Halloween themed game for this year’s parties!
This game is fast, furious, and so much fun. Two teams (zombies and survivors) are rolling dice and trying to get the playing pawn from the center start tile to their end tile by rolling certain numbers on the dice.
The catch? If they roll a certain number on their dice, they switch sides. You want to be on the winning side of the game but who knows which one that’ll actually be.
Who Is This Game best For?
- Best Ages: As long as you can roll dice, you can play this game! We played with older kids through grandparents and everyone had a great time.
- Group size: You can play this with any size group, but I’d probably keep it to 12 people or less simply so it doesn’t get too chaotic.
- People who appreciate chaos: If you like a little chaos, this game might just be your new favorite!
Supplies
You really only need four things to play this game and one is them is optional, it just makes the experience better!
- Two dice per person – everyone will need two dice. I like to give each person two dice in the same color and use different colors for different people. I have this set of colored dice just for games like this, I’ve used it so many times!
- A pawn – you can use whatever you want, it just needs to be something that’ll easily stand up on its own and that is large enough to quickly grab during the game.
- Zombies vs survivors printout – you can get it along with a printable copy of the rules for this game at the end of this post for free!
- Tape – this is totally optional, but I highly recommend taping the game board on the table so it doesn’t move around as chaos ensues! I have this set of colored tape and use it all the time!

How to play Zombies vs Survivors
This game is so simple to play, which is why it’s so perfect for Halloween parties! I’ve included step by step instructions below but it really is so simple.
1 – Setup the Game
Print out the game board and cut it in half so you have the green (zombie) spaces on one page and the red (survivor) spaces on the other half.
Tape the two pieces together overlapping the start spaces of the two so you have one long game board with the two end spots at the well ends of the board.
Then tape that entire thing to the center of the table where you’ll be playing the game. You want everyone to be able to reach it that is playing so make sure it’s as close to the center as possible. And like I said before, you don’t have to tape it down, I just find it’s easier if it’s stable rather than moving around with the pawn.
Place the game pawn on the start space in the middle. Give everyone playing two dice each then split your group in half and have half the group stand on one side of the table and the other half stand on the other side. Then you’re ready to play!

2 – Play the Game
When you say go, the race is on. Everyone rolls at the exact same time and keeps rolling until the game is over.
Depending on what players roll, this is what happens:
- If you roll a 7 – move the pawn one space to your side’s end space
- If you roll a 3 or 11 – switch sides to the other team, you’re now rolling for that team
This game is fun chaos. Everyone is rolling, moving the pawn toward their end space, and switching sides (and teams) all at once.
Keep playing until the pawn is moved to one of the end spaces and that team wins. I like to give out small prizes like pieces of candy to the winning team!

How to Win Survivors vs Zombies
The goal of the game is to move the pawn all the way down the game board to your team’s end space. The first team that can do that wins!
If at any point, all players have moved to one team then no one wins. Start over and try again until the winning team doesn’t have everyone. Alternately, you can also just say that everyone ends up on one team that everyone wins and they all get candy!
If you want to give out prizes, I like to give them to the individual if they beat the coven. You don’t want to reward the coven every time they win because it’s a much larger group, but it’s fun to reward the individual if they can actually escape the coven!

Prize ideas
If you want to give out prizes for the winning team to make this a bit more competitive, any of these Halloween party favors would make fun small prizes for the winning players. Candy or $1 bills are always good too!
Or something like these things like these temporary tattoos or any of these Halloween trinkets would be great for kids.
Game FAQs
Do you take turns rolling the dice?
No, both teams are rolling continuously throughout the game. There is no turn taking, which is why the game is so chaotic and fun!
What happens if everyone ends up on one team?
This is your choice. I like to make it that if everyone ends up on one team then no one wins but you can also do the opposite where if everyone ends up on one team then everyone wins!
What does it mean to switch teams?
It literally means switching teams. Take your dice and quickly switch to the other side of the table and start rolling with the other team. If you were a zombie to start and you roll an 11 or 3, then you’re now on the survivor team.
Helpful Tips
Make sure the there is plenty of space around the table so that it’s easy for everyone to move from one side to the other side of the table quickly. There will be lots of moving and you don’t want people to have issues getting to the other team.
Give everyone their own color of dice. This game happens fast, and it’s much easier to keep track of what you roll if you have an assigned color. Or if you don’t have enough colors, make sure everyone rolls small and right in front of them.
