I love coming up with festive food for Halloween. Most of the ideas we’ve shared so far have been Halloween party snacks that are sweet, cute, and not-so-scary like our ghost brownies and witch hat cookies.
But this year we wanted to do something a bit creepy and after playing around with the idea of doing something bloody for a while, we came up with these bloody breadsticks. They’re supposed to look like a bloody intestine, all wrapped up into a tasty breadstick.
They may look creepy, but they taste amazing. And because they start with a store-bought bread dough, they’re super easy to make too! They’d be the perfect complement to Halloween pumpkin pizzas for a festive Halloween night!
Why People Love These
- Spooky food – these rolls are just the right amount of gross, which is perfect for Halloween.
- Quick – these take just under thirty minutes, and half of that is bake time, leaving you with plenty of time to get all dressed up.
- Family-friendly – while these are creepy looking, the flavors are totally family-friendly so perfect for a family Halloween party!
Ingredients in Bloody Breadsticks

Ingredient Notes + Substitutions
- Canned French bread – I know this sounds made up, but I promise it is not. I get it at my local Walmart right next to all the other Pillsbury baked goodies. If you have the time, you can use homemade breadstick dough as well, but the store bought stuff is actually great in these!
- Parmesan cheese – grated is my preference, but shredded works.
- Red food coloring – this is the key to getting it to look creepy. I know it’s not ideal but it’s Halloween and I guarantee if your kids are eating candy, they’re getting red dye anyway.
How to make these bloody intestine rolls
Halloween isn’t complete without a bloody breadstick to go with your spaghetti and eyeballs. With this straightforward recipe, you get to spend your evening making fun memories without compromising on the festive food. I’ve included basic instructions below, but you can jump to the recipe to find full measurements and details!
1 – make the seasoning
- Melt the butter in a small bowl in the microwave or oven or however you like to melt butter. Just melt it, don’t brown it.
- Add the spices and red food coloring to the melted butter and stir to mix it completely.

2 – shape the breadsticks
- Preheat your oven to 375 and spray a muffin tin with non-stick baking spray.
- Lay the dough out on a clean surface (or a piece of parchment paper) and evenly divide the dough into twelve sections.
- Taking one piece of dough at a time, roll it like a snake. The longer the better.
- Take your long piece of dough and dip it into the butter mixture. The goal is to coat the whole rope.
- Immediately transfer the rope into a muffin tin. There’s no wrong way to do this, so ravel them in however you want.
- Repeat the process with all the dough. No two breadsticks should be the same.
- Bake until golden brown and serve warm.
- Sprinkle the tops of the breadsticks with parmesan cheese then put in the oven.
Dough tip
The dough is much easier to work with when it is closer to room temperature. It doesn’t take long for them to warm up, but I recommend letting them sit out for twenty minutes before rolling them.
If you find that the dough is cracking, set that one aside to rest, then come back to it after a few minutes. You can also pinch the dough back together if it does break.

3 – bake the Breadsticks
- Sprinkle the tops of the breadsticks with parmesan cheese then put in the oven.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown and serve warm.

You can either serve these on their own as a snack or serve them with a homemade pizza or marinara sauce for dipping. I’ve also personally enjoyed them dipped into our homemade fettuccini Afredo sauce!

Recipe FAQs
Do I have to use canned breadsticks?
No, you can make your own dough if you like. Make sure you adjust the cook time appropriately, but the process is the same.
Do I have to use red food coloring?
There are natural food dyes that you can use instead if you prefer. I wouldn’t recommend using beet root unless you don’t mind the flavor.
Storage Information
Store in an airtight container for up to two days. After that, I found the canned dough was not as good. Homemade dough may last longer.
Reheat in the oven for best results. The microwave dries the rolls out faster and leaves them a bit tough.
