Frozen Butterbeer Universal Inspired
One of my favorite memories is reading the Harry Potter books with my oldest son then taking him to Universal Studios to see the books brought to life. Out of all of the theme parks I’ve been to (sorry Disney), Universal Studios’ Harry Potter lands are easily the most immersive – you really feel like you’re there!
And one of my favorite parts of the parks is the Harry Potter food they’ve created from the books. Pumpkin pasties and pumpkin juice are two of my favorite Harry Potter recipes, but the most popular is always the butterbeer.
I shared this butterbeer recipe a few years ago that went crazy and people have been asking for a frozen butterbeer recipe forever – and it’s finally here!
Regular butterbeer is delicious but there is just something about the frozen version that makes it tastes like something completely different. It’s creamy, chilled, and full of butterscotch flavor – not to sound corny but it really is magical!
And it goes really well with this butterbeer popcorn for a Harry Potter movie night or to celebrate Harry Potter’s birthday on July 31st!
Why People Love frozen butterbeer
- Quick – making frozen butterbeer only takes a few minutes and that’s always a great thing!
- Perfect for a crowd – you’ll mix everything together in a blender, so it’s super easy to make as much as you want! As long as it fits in the blender, you can make a big batch at once!
- Fun themed dessert – everyone loves a good themed dessert, and this one really says Harry Potter with its butterscotch flavor!
Ingredients in frozen butterbeer
Ingredient Notes + Substitutions
- Butterscotch pudding – you can use either instant or cook and serve, you’re just using the dry mix so it really doesn’t matter.
- Ice cream – I’ve only tried this with vanilla ice cream, but you would probably use butterscotch ice cream as well to get even more butterscotch flavor!
- Butterscotch sauce – I just use butterscotch ice cream topping like Smuckers! It would probably work with a homemade butterscotch sauce as well, but I haven’t tried it. If you really can’t find butterscotch sauce, you can use caramel sauce but it won’t taste like butterbeer.
How to make frozen butterbeer
This frozen butterbeer recipe is super easy – it’s just adding ingredients to a blender and blending! I’ve included a basic outline below, but make sure to check out the recipe card at the bottom of the post for detailed instructions!
- Add the cream soda, vanilla ice cream, butterscotch sauce, and dry butterscotch pudding mix to the blender and blender until combined.
- Add the ice and blend again until combined.
Once the frozen butterbeer is done, pour it into a glass and top it with whipped cream and more butterscotch sauce if you want then serve immediately! You can also just serve it plain but everything is better with whipped cream on top!
Tip!
Make it even fancier by adding some streaks of butterscotch sauce inside the glass before you pour the frozen butterbeer inside! That just adds even more delicious butterscotch flavor.
How to store Frozen Butterbeer
Just like a milkshake, frozen butterbeer is really only good served immediately. If you want to try and store leftovers to enjoy later, put it in a freezer safe container and freeze.
Then when you’re ready to eat it later, wait until it’s thawed enough to get it out of the container and blend again. It won’t be the same but will still be enjoyable. I still recommend just making a new batch, but that’s the best to way to save it for later!
Helpful Tips
- Use full size ice cubes rather than crushed ice and leave it a little icy rather than blending it so it’s completely smooth – that icy texture is what makes it taste like frozen butterbeer!
- Refrigerate the cream soda and butterscotch sauce so they’re chilled before you add them to the drink. It’ll just make the butterbeer even colder!
- Make sure to blend the actual ingredients together before adding the ice. You want them to combine together well before you add the ice – it really does make a difference!
