No Bake Oreo Muddy Buddies

We’re big fans of Oreos and muddy buddies over here. Dirt and worms muddy buddies is a fun shareable snack that is a cross between the classic puppy chow and everyone’s favorite dirt cake!

I’ve made both dirt cookies and Easter dessert cups that are also fun twists on the original, but this is the first time we’re using Chex cereal as the base rather than layers of crushed Oreos and pudding.

Let me tell you, this stuff is addicting!

The crispy cereal and mini Oreos are coated in melted chocolate which get sprinkled with vanilla pudding powder to coat all the nooks and crannies! Throw in some gummy worms and you’ve got a fun and whacky snack that everyone will love!

Ingredient Notes

  • Mini Oreos – If you can’t find mini ones, chop up regular Oreos instead but most stores should have mini ones!
  • Dark chocolate melting wafers – Use milk chocolate wafers if you prefer your dirt and worms muddy buddies a bit sweeter. Also, if you really want to you can use dark chocolate chocolate chips, but the Ghirardelli melting wafers are definitely my favorite!
  • Instant vanilla pudding mix – vanilla pudding is what I normally use in dirt cake, so I figured I would do the same here. However, chocolate pudding mix would work just as well and might even give it that extra dirty look. Also, make sure you’re using the dry mix, not the actually pudding!

How to make Dirt cake muddy buddies

  1. Mix together the Chex cereal and and one cup of mini Oreos into a large bowl.
  2. Put the dark chocolate melting wafers into a microwave safe bowl and microwave for 45 seconds then remove from the microwave and stir. Put it back in and microwave for 20 second increments, stirring in between, until the chocolate is completely melted.
  3. Pour the melted dark chocolate into the large bowl of Chex cereal and mini Oreos. Gently fold the melted chocolate into the cereal mix until the cereal is completely coated.

This would be a really fun treat to enjoy while working on these Earth Day worksheets, while talking about these Earth Day questions, or as a treasure at the end of this nature scavenger hunt!

Tips & tricks

Be quick with the dirt. You want to sprinkle the pudding into the mix before the chocolate sets. This is what will create a nice coating for each piece of cereal.

Swap the pudding. Use crushed Oreos instead of the pudding mix if you prefer. Remove the creamy centers first.

Keep it airtight. Since this recipe makes just over 16 cups, you may have some you want to keep for later. Store it airtight at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

Recipe FAQs

Why did my muddy buddies get soggy?

This can happen when you coat the Chex cereal with hot melted chocolate. It’s especially true if you don’t stir everything immediately to make sure it’s all evenly coated. Otherwise, areas that are coated in more chocolate will have a greater chance of becoming soggy.

Once you’ve coated with chocolate and sprinkled with pudding mix, you can put it in the fridge to cool down if you prefer.

Do muddy bites need to be refrigerated?

They don’t! These will last for weeks at room temperature. I mean, in theory. They’ll be gone way before that, trust me.

Can I use regular-sized Oreos?

Sure you can. Just be sure to crush them into the size of mini Oreos.
